so happy that so many of my deserving friends received at least one nomination! thrilled that Gregory Porter received two!!

I don't buy any more. And I've never downloaded anything. But I do listen (too damn much) to Bob Parlocha's syndicated show. So I've probably heard 80% of the nominees. I can't say that any stuck with me or resonated in such a way that I wanted to buy...or even, necessarily, hear again. That isn't to say they're bad, but unless something really catches my ear...is stimulating...goes a new direction... Yeah, I know such things don't end up on Parlocha.

I'd acknowledge Kenny Garrett as a guy who says something from time to time, though I can't comment on this year's nomination. And vocals - I don't so vocals.

Sorry if I seem like a grumpy old man.

Without presuming to know just what Mr. Reynolds' opinion is, I concur with one element I sense in it: being nominated for or winning a Grammy isn't really strong testimony for artistic merit. To some degree, in MY opinion, it almost argues against possession that "merit" if one seeks music that challenges the average listener. Unless you can appeal to a pretty broad swath of listeners - albeit (I'm being generous here) a "cut above" average in the people who actually nominate - you aren't going to get nominated.

I mention Bob Parlocha above. His show is apparently enjoyed by a great number of listeners across the country (syndicated program). I enjoy it enough to listen when radio is what I've got and his program is on. But he is, by his own terminology, "mainstream". You hear the Grammy nominees on his show (not so much the Latin nominees; apparently, they aren't mainstream.) That's fine. At least it's not radio pablum.

Well, Terri Lyne's update is well worth listening to. I've heard most of it on WBGO.

My major gripe with the Grammys is not only that they've relegated the Jazz awards to the "pre-show" off camera, but that they've consolidated the awards to such an extent they've become trivial. Why not Male and Female vocalists? Don't get me started...

I'm "shocked," Peter!! Gregory has three wonderful CDs out and I will be very interested in your reaction. you can hear a lot of his music on the internet, YouTube, his website, etc.

I'm also really enjoying Cecile McLorin Salvant these days!

I am also a huge fan of Gregory Porter. He is refreshing in his phrasing and I really like his melodies and lyrics. I enjoyed his tunes on David Murray's Be My Monster Love a lot.

My vote for vocalist goes to Tierney Sutton no bias here.

The Recording Academy, the institution behind the Grammy Awards, has announced
its 2015 Special Merit Awards recipients. They include a Lifetime Achievement Award
for saxophonist/composer Wayne Shorter, 81, and a Trustees Award for George Wein,
the 89-year-old founder and producer of the Newport Jazz Festival, New Orleans Jazz
& Heritage Festival and other music events. The latter award, says a press release,
"recognizes outstanding contributions in areas other than performance." . . .

The award ceremony will take place at a special invitation-only event during Grammy
Week on Feb. 7. The 57th Annual Grammy Awards will be broadcast live the following
evening on the CBS Television Network.

Tellyawhat, just got Arturo O'Farrill & LJO's 'The Offense Of The Drum'. WOW!! This a major statement, absolutely brilliant! I own 4 of the 5 nominated, great records (and so many more that weren't nominated, another very strong year for El Jazz Latino!) but I can tell ya that this category's a lock! I also just got Jerry Gonzalez big band tribute to his Fort Apache Band, also very highly recommended. 2 outstanding scores, Merry Xmas to me!!;)
