DownBeat Announces 2014 Readers Poll Results

Postby bluenoter » October 28th, 2014, 12:56 pm

I'm cutting to the chase, but an introductory article accompanies the list of winners here. And JT's
thread on the winners of DownBeat's 2014 Critics Poll is here.

Valerie, does the pink denote winners you agree should have won their category?

not that I don't think the others are deserving, the pink just denotes musicians who are personal favorites or I'm glad have been honored.

What is the average age of the winners--70? 80?
Surely not all of a sudden. Less than half of a sudden at best.

No, not by my calculations. It would be a pretty difficult task to assess the "average" age of these DB winners, walto. While there are a number of musicians in their 70s and older, there are a greater number of musicians in that group who are significantly younger, though I think I understand what your drift is.

For instance, among the "younger" are:

Pat Metheny [60]
Wynton Marsalis [53]
Trombone Shorty [28]
Kenny Garrett [54]
Chris Potter [43]
Gary Smulyan [58]
Anat Cohen [38?]
Joey DeFrancesco [43]
Regina Carter [48]
Poncho Sanchez [63]
Béla Fleck [56]
Diana Krall [49]
Gregory Porter [42]
Maria Schneider [53]
Robert Glasper [36]

That's more than ½ of the winners on the Downbeat list. Only two are over 60. Surprised?
