Who Wants to Talk about PIE?
It's summer again and fresh fruit is sparkling all over the place. Why can't I find sour cherries? It's cherry season... I want to make a pie for July 4th.
Anyone in New York seen any sour cherries around in the markets?

we've got plenty of strawberries. and dark cherries from Washington. and plums and other stuff.

I s'pose this will be my first confession on this topic: I'm strict vegetarian. So no pie for me. I've got to get by on cobblers (with fake margarine). But fruit pie, a cherished memory from my youth. I'll take fruit anyway I can get it. Easy on that sugar, though.

While we're confessin' I'm a Lacto-Vegetarian; I eat dairy products, but not eggs.

You saw them there? I was at the Tribeca WF and they didn't have any.

Man, the 1st thing I thought about when I saw this thread title was my old pal, Dobie aka Singin Sumo. He loved to talk about pie and soup, and ...
Sometimes when we'd talk by phone, Dobie would say "c'mon over and we'll have some soup 'n' pie ... soup 'n' pie, Fadda."
I love pie, and this time of year, a 1st harvest of rhubarb from our backyard goes very nicely with some sweet strawberries. Add a scoop of French Vanilla ice cream on top and yummmmmm.

I really dislike rhubarb. Sour and worse version of celery that gets soggy and disgusting when cooked, needs tons of sugar to be edible, and shouldn't really be used for anything except maybe some sort of construction supply IMHO.
Surely not all of a sudden. Less than half of a sudden at best.

I'm not a big pie eater and I can take or leave sweets in general but I love me some pecan pie. Considering the ingredients you'd think it would be cloyingly sweet but in this case that's not so.

I wish we had a "like" button here. I would have clicked that right away for this post! I don't DISlike rhubarb, I just never have thought about it very much. I was rarely on the farm when it was in season, so hardly ever ate whatever desserts were made from it when I was a kid. It's awfully sour. Have to work too hard to make it taste good, I agree. I think my mother made stewed rhubarb once, and my dad asked that she never do that again. Nowadays, since I have arthritis, rhubarb is a giant irritant. it causes joints to seize. Somebody else can have my piece of that pie, for sure...

Joanne makes rhubard pie about once a year because her mother made it when she and her siblings were growing up. She loves it. I think she likes it so much because it reminds her of her childhood. I've tasted the pie and I have to say it's not very sour at all. I'm pretty sure it's because she balances it out with copious amounts of strawberries and sugar just like her mother did.

I'm with you, Jimmy. I really dislike overly sweet things, but for some reason, a well-made Pecan Pie says BINGO to my tastebuds.
Patti made a really wonderful Rhubarb Cream Pie a few days ago. Most here wouldn't have wanted a slice. They would have missed something truly special. The rhubarb grows in our back yard, and was given to us by a friend over 40 years ago. He brought it to Anchorage when he moved here from Skagway. It was his Mom's stock, and over 50 years old then. So, it's nearly 100 years old now.
