I believe I first saw him on TV in the late '60s - he'd shamble onstage, profoundly disheveled, spend a few moments in apparent bewilderment, then begin his routine (invariably, IIRC) with the proclamation "However!"
His dates: July 29, 1914 – February 6, 2017 — 102+ years!
