I have a feeling he lived a good and prosperous life. Good for him! We should all aspire to that goal.

and because I know a long-time friend of his, I know that he has lived his life as a very caring, conscious and generous man. there was an amazing senior artist/sculptor years ago, who had moved here from Jamaica and Paris, who was struggling and not only did James buy some of his fabulous works, he also just gave him money to enable him to live. all done very quietly and secretly. a fine man, obviously.

Same here. That totally fits my impression of him.

My mother was a big fan of his.
Surely not all of a sudden. Less than half of a sudden at best.
