One of the very first jazz tunes I played as a drummer was Sister Sadie, and I dug it really hard. I thought that was one of the hippest tunes ever. Still do.

Wow, I have to confess that I thought he had already died a while back. Big influence on me in my early years. RIP, sir.

Until reading an article today, I had forgotten that Horace began his musical career as a tenor saxophonist in the style of Lester Young, before switching to piano. He was discovered by a tenor player, Stan Getz, who took him on the road with him. His association with Art Blakey was also pivotal in his early development.

Man, what a musical legacy he leaves behind. Staggering.

Doug: not strange you thought that, as he'd been suffering from Alzheimer's for some time, and definitely "out of circulation."

He had such a huge influence on my musical taste... what I still listen to and love -- and play.

He was a great friend of my good friends (from Chicago) Earma and Marshall Thompson. I can't help thinking they are all playing together today...

One of the 1st Jazz records I ever bought; In Pursuit Of The 27th Man (correction!). I was into the Dreams band at the time, when I saw the Brecker bros. on the Silver record I scooped it up not knowing a thing about him. I loved it! Last record of his I picked up was Hardbop Grandpop! RIP.
