Paul Bley recorded many great solo sessions. Still my favorite. Few selections:

Don't want to load the page down with images...but also his relatively recent Nothing To Declare (2004), Changing Hands (1990), and Basics (2000).

I can listen to solo Monk all day, from any year.

Amazon sez that the CD is "in stock" but also that a CD-R will be manufactured on demand. Currently $16.98.

CD-Rs and DVD-Rs (the "R" stands for "recordable") look like the discs you're used to and offer the same audio and image quality. This recordable media is used to manufacture titles on demand, as fully authorized by the content provider.

Through manufacturing on demand, CreateSpace, part of the Amazon.com group of companies, enables Amazon.com to offer music and video content that might not otherwise be available. Each disc comes fully packaged, with artwork, in a standard jewel case for audio and an Amaray case for video, although for reissued products the artwork may differ from the original.

CreateSpace works with many of the leading music labels, television networks, film studios, and other distributors to make these titles available to Amazon.com customers. All products are manufactured from original source materials (e.g., for audio products, uncompressed CD-quality audio). . . .

Funnily enough, solo piano is not really a favorite listening scenario of mine. Of course there are many recordings that are fantastic, but I find it's not something I spontaneously want to put on very often.

One of my favorite solo piano recordings is "Jimmy Rowles Plays Ellington and Strayhorn."

I like the elegant old stuff, too, like Teddy Wilson and John Lewis. I heard a recent Alan Broadbent solo CD that sounded fantastic.

Less taken with dramatic, exciting, virtuosic solo piano. McCoy solo would probably be too thunderous for my tastes.

I do like Cecil Taylor's solo outings. But that's almost a genre of its own.

There is a problem with this question: so much music, so little time to listen.

Sorry, but I missed this one while hangin' with my honey in Hawai'i. Hey, that would make a nifty song title.

I've been a fan of Art Lande for a long, long time so can recommend a couple for you, Jeff. He hasn't recorded many solo albums, so I'd also highly recommend some of his duo² and trio³ efforts, and with his band, Rubisa Patrol.

By the way, Jeff, Art is also a fine drummer.

Duo² -

Red Lanta
with Jan Garbarek
Shift in the Wind with Gary Peacock

Trio³ -

Skylight with Paul McCandless and Dave Samuels

Friday the 13th: Art Lande Plays Monk

While She Sleeps (Described below)

Blue Coast Records and Grammy-Nominated jazz pianist, Art Lande have teamed up to release this extraordinary collection of classic songs and original pieces. The quiet, subtle nature of the recording is a masterful example of key control and pedaling of which every pianist will want to take note. Performed on an 1885 Steinway, without the use of studio enhancements like equalization, compression, reverb or other digital effects the recordings were immediately sought after by audiophile manufacturers to demonstrate their gear. The sound is clear and immediate yet could put a baby to sleep.

Art Lande is no stranger to recording having released for ECM and Windham Hill; and performed with artists such as Charlie Haden, Woody Shaw, Jan Garbarek, Paul McCandless, Joe Henderson and Nguyèn Lè. He tours the world in various ensembles under his own name and as a popular sideman.

"This is truly a piano recording for piano lovers; I'm sure it's going to get plenty of playing at CES and other audio shows. Even the standard CD layer sonics are exemplary."
—John Sunier, Audiophile Audition

While She Sleeps was recorded to analog 2" multitrack tape, mixed to both analog 1/2" tape and Direct Stream Digital (DSD) for release on SACD and CD.
