I think it was Vivaldi? Maybe?

It wasn't the music in this YouTube clip, correct? (That's the folk tune "Loch Lomond" or a very similar tune, played by I don't know what band. I doubt that it would bring Vivaldi to mind.)

It's "supposed to be" this (click the Start button to listen). Was it?

Speaking of old and British, I liked the music (as well as everything else) in Brideshead Revisited. Not spectacular, but nice. Same guy (Geoffrey Turgeon?) did the music to one of my favorite movies, Turtle Diary.

The theme to House of Cards is kind of catchy.

You missed the memo that if you liked Turtle Diary you're not allowed to hate Tampopo?

steve already mentioned barney miller which was one of my favorites-i also liked a lot the theme from hill street blues.bonanza is obviously a good choice and it also came to my mind one from the british comedy of the early 80s i think-only fools and horses.

I don't doubt that he's written thousands. The point of the snarky joke was, he only has one song that people know and/or recognize as his.

I do know Perry Como's hit "It's Impossible" According to the entry for the song on Wikipedia (and therefor, as you sort of acknowledge TRUE for ALL INTERNET purposes ) Steve Allen had nothing to do with it: "Somos Novios (It's Impossible)" is a song written by the premier Mexican bolero composer Armando Manzanero in 1970. The song was translated into English immediately by Sid Wayne and first recorded by Perry Como the same year under the title "It's Impossible".[1] It is one of the most popular boleros of all time. Besides Como, it has been recorded by Elvis Presley, Andy Williams, The Three Degrees, Jerry Vale, Dennis Brown, and Andrea Bocelli. Tejano group Mazz recorded this as part of a medley entitled "Canciones De Amor" which was on the album Para Nuestra Gente."

Sometimes, the theme music isn't something I'd like on its own but is perfect for the show.

I'm not Mike, but I know "Gravy Waltz," and in fact, that's the tune that comes to mind when I think of Steve Allen as a composer. I see that it won a Grammy for best jazz composition in 1963. However, I'm also reading that Ray Brown composed it and that all Steve Allen did was add lyrics later! I've never heard it as anything but an instrumental. Anyway, Allen sometimes played it as a piano solo, in a nice loose, laid-back fashion.

My all time favorite theme is Nelson Riddle's theme from "Emergency" closely followed by the Bob Newhart theme and the theme from "Taxi".

Steve Allen rubbed many the wrong way but he had one of the best comedy shows ever with Don Knotts, Tom Poston, Louis Nye, Pat Harrington, Jr., Bill Dana, Steve Lawrence (who could be very funny) and a great band led by Terry Gibbs.

He was also very funny and hugely talented. I became a fan of his when he had the radio show in LA in the early 50s.

I still am.
