Octets, Nonets, & Tentets
Octets, Nonets, & Tentets
Can't sleep and have been thinking about this topic. I've always dug the sound of Octets, Nonets, & Tentets. Larger than a usual band but smaller than a Big Band. I've always enjoyed the different sounds available from such combos, especially if the music is well-arranged and written. Starting with Davis/Evans 'Birth Of The Cool'. But I find that even though I own somewhere between 4-5000 LP/CD's I really don't own that many records that I'd consider fits in this particular grouping. I'm going to list the ones that immediately come to mind and I'm hoping to get recommendations from you guys. Mind you, I own tons of records of bands that consist of 8, 9, or 10 players, but I'm not talking about percussionists or multiple electric instrumentation!;) I'm talking basic rhythm section (piano, bass, drums) plus horns. I'm chuckling to myself as a few random records I'm looking at, that I thought fell into this group are actually larger than I realized! So here's another question, what's considered the minimum amount of musicians that would be considered a Big Band. My guess is at least 12 horns plus rhythm section but.....AND some records I thought fell into this category are actually smaller! Like Oliver Nelson's.
Phil Woods Little Big Band
Joe Lovano Nonet
Jim McNeely Tentet
Always thought Dexter Gordon's 'Sophisticated Giant' was a tentet but it's actually 12!
Rob McConnell Tentet
Howard Johnson & Gravity
Ok guys, looking forward to yr recs!

My favorite nonets ALL have 10 parts. Why stop at 9?
And I turn it up to 11 when listening.

Re: Octets, Nonets, & Tentets
Yup, I have the Dave Holland record as well as the Wynton Marsalis, the highlights disc, not the box set, which I always felt should've shut the mouths of all the WM naysayers out there as I really think it's a tremendous recording! I thought I was gonna get crushed with recommendations, kinda surprised. I've mentioned the ratio within my music collection which I feel is miniscule, can it be that there really aren't too many to speak of?
Re: Octets, Nonets, & Tentets
Harris Eisenstadt has built up a very impressive portfolio. This recording has it all.

Tentets more plentiful, it appears, than the other formats suggested in the original post...

No question about it. Mulligan's band had Miles on horn, amongst others.

Not so. Reynolds was complying with the requested specs:

One of my most treasured items is the 10" original Mulligan ten-tette, autographed by Gerry.

Re: Octets, Nonets, & Tentets
Today I found some spare time to make a SQL, to find the recordings with 8 to 10 musicians in my database. I removed the string things, the one with vocal focus and the electronic stuff. But I left the ones with piano. Some of the rest has been mentioned already.
