What Are You Listening To?
Re: What Are You Listening To?
Kris Davis, Mat Maneri, Ingrid Laubrock. Trevor Dunn, Tom Rainey.
I found it to be slow and a drudge the first couple times listening, but my mind changed and I'm really starting to get and like this CD.

still havn't warmed to this is seeing the band once (very good) and then again a year later (great) kind of ruins the recording for me as it comes nowhere near capturing what the band sounds like live - and as is usually the case on recordings - there is *nothing* that compares to seeing and hearing Mat Maneri from the second tiny little table @ Cornelia Street where I could reach out and touch his viola or bow with a little stretch on my part.
And the last time earlier this year, he was playing at a genius level and elevated the rest of the ensemble to try to somewhere above their normal more mere mortal standards of improvising.
My friend who has seen Mat more than I said it was the best he's ever heard him.

Steve, I'm on to another Mat Maneri CD:
I like this more than the Kris Davis session.

quite beautiful and the slightly reverbed sound actually works. I've seen Mat in a quartet with Lucien, Garth Stevenson and Randy Peterson, but with the drummer, a much different animal
Mat and Lucien were invited by Evan Parker to join him during his week at The Stone next week (9/20) and I wouldn't miss it for the world.
Mike - worth it to hear what Mat Maneri's viola sounds like up close and personal. Really no sound in music that compares - completely unique and his own approach.

This is Brazilian guitar music (with some vocals) from Baden Powell. It arguably belongs on the "The Other WAYLT Thread," but I think of Brazilian music as Jazz (even though it isn't)

Disappointing to hear, because that's a wonderful combo on paper.
Listened to Peacock / Crispell. Azure at the record store and put it back on the shelf. Found it absolutely boooooooring, but it seams, i'm not alone.
