Down But Not Out
After fending off a mega-cold that everyone in the family had suffered with during our visit in California, I took a serious turn for the worse Friday, having Patti call 911. I wound up in the Emergency Room of a nearby hospital via ambulance, then the ICU, where I am now. I'm feeling much better, but will likely be here for a few more days, recovering from pneumonia. We missed our flights home on Saturday, but Alaska Airlines was extraordinarily accommodating with us. Thank You, AA! And, Thank You Darren & Brenda for being so helpful, warm and loving, while providing us with such wonderful, comfortable accommodations.
I'll try to keep you posted on my progress, often a long road.

Re: Down But Not Out
After some really beneficial treatments, decent sleep, and a terrific team surrounding me, I asked Patti to take a snapshot of me, stylin'in my cool, lime green hospital robe. Don't be fooled by this cover shot, I'm not out of the woods yet. Pneumonia is serious business, especially for folks with compromised lungs. I moved from the ICU this morning. One day at a time.

Hopefully, I will be able to leave for some further rest and recuperation at Darren & Brenda's tomorrow, depending upon the results of some tests.

I got discharged from the hospital a couple of hours ago. It was nearly a week, altogether.
More details and a couple of photos later.

Re: Down But Not Out
I'm sprung from the hospital! Finally. It's been quite an ordeal, but thanks to a terrific doctor, many fine nurses, and my loving family's support, I'm now back in our son's home. We'll stay in California for a while, awaiting a new portable oxygen concentrator and regaining a little strength. I should see 2 of our 3 grandchildren in a few minutes. I took these shots from my wheelchair as Margarita pushed me to Darren's car. Then, she gave me a warm, sweet hug and wished me well.

Patti & I are extremely fortunate to have this time for me to heal in a family environment. The vibes are terrific, inside and out. The sun felt especially good and the temperature was perfect. Sublime.

Earlier this week ...
Hangin' out in a favorite spot while staying cool & hydrated. My sensitive skin reveals what a week of IVs, shots, pinching & squeezing did to my arms. No pain, though.

We weighed the facts, and based upon the way I'm feeling and improving, Patti booked our return to Alaska for this weekend. That still gives me time for more rest, light exercise and the benefits of this environment, which are considerable.
Until then, I'll be spending more time on this lovely patio, an oasis of sorts.

On Wednesday we headed to the ocean for a favorite fish & chips lunch spot in Malibu, my first outing since since being discharged. Progress! While waiting, I couldn't resist taking a shot of Sophie's classic school desk next to me. She's added her hospital Visitors Pass to the mix.

From Saturday ...
"Coco" came to give me some love and say goodbye. Sweet. Then, it was one last look at the beautiful flowers in bloom at Darren & Brenda's and on to the airport.

Re: Down But Not Out
After landing in Seattle we settled into the new Alaska Airlines Board Room for our 2-hour layover. They provide complimentary soup, salad, fresh cut vegetables, bagels, muffins, pastries, juices, coffee and a full bar. Pretty comfy, too. Just what the doctor ordered.

Saturday ...
Home again, home again, jiggity jig.
Patti & I had a (mostly) smooth flight from Seattle, with the usual turbulence approaching Anchorage. We toasted with sparkling wine. I wish I could show you the incredibly beautiful view we had of Mt. McKinley (Denali) & Foraker in alpenglow, and Mt. Susitna nearby as we were landing.

Thanks. Yeah, and it plays nicely and sounds terrific, too. It's my son Darren's kit, a Pearl Custom Session series. He's mostly a bassist, but wanted a kit for recording, and our other son, Justin, is a drummer, so ... Justin supplied the cymbals.
