My wife really liked Skopje. (Keep in mind, we were "tourists", though I was working days.) Really laid-back among the water. Nice cafes and some restaurants. Wish I could go again.

We'd come from Tirana, which we also loved, but the living was definitely easier in Macedonia.

I envy you for your travels! I have about fifth-hand, but indelible, emotional connections to Skopje. I don't want to get started on that subject, though.
