I got this email earlier today from

Eric Jackson

      Dear Colleagues,

It is with much sadness that I write to tell you that long-time Berklee faculty member in the Piano Department, Ray Santisi, passed away last night [October 29].

Ray was an alum of Berklee College and Boston Conservatory of Music and taught at Berklee for 47 years (since 1957). . . .

Information about funeral arrangements will be communicated once those are known.

      Regards,

      Jay Kennedy
      . . . Berklee College of Music

I'm deeply saddened by this news.

Ray Santisi was one of my professors at Berklee in the early 60s, and he couldn't have been nicer or more supportive of students. His "rhythm workshop" classes were infectious and popular, working with a piano-based trio of students, including a bassist and drummer to hone that special relationship. It was in that classroom where I first saw and heard Tony Williams for the 1st time.

It's one thing to identify with your teachers as being older than you, but sometimes there's something inside you which feels or hopes they'll live forever. For me, Ray Santisi was one of them, as were Alan Dawson and Herb Pomeroy, whose passing preceded Ray's.

He was a handsome, well-dressed devil, too.

It's just a soundcheck, but it's cool nonetheless.
