‘Remembering Herbie Nichols’
From the mid-1990s into this decade, the pianist Frank Kimbrough has led a small-scale but serious repertory band called the Herbie Nichols Project. Here Mr. Kimbrough revisits the music of Nichols, a pianist and composer of spiraling intrigue, in fine company as usual: the trumpeter Ron Horton, the tenor saxophonist Ted Nash, the bassist Ben Allison and the drummer Matt Wilson. — Nate Chinen
