BONESHAKER (Chicago/Oslo)
Chicago fire music… courtesy of this powerhouse trio with prolific members, carrying among them a Grammy nomination and decades of experience with some of the top ensembles in the world.  Free-jazz fire meets punk energy, plus great improvisational momentum resulting in a huge, distinctive sound, that can only be honed by years of playing, touring and recording with one another in various settings and with some of the greatest players anywhere! Norwegian iconoclast, drummer Paal Nilssen-Love, born on Xmas Eve, raised in a jazz club, touring with many greats and appearing on over 60 albums since 2000 (Peter Brötzmann, Atomic, Evan Parker, Otomo Yoshihide, Ken Vandermark) and considered by many to be “the greatest drummer on earth”, is joined by Chicago saxophonist Mars Williams, who studied with Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell and toured with the Brötzmann Tentet, Vandermark 5, The Psychedelic Furs, Billy Idol and Robert Palmer-era Power Station, plus the Indiana-born, Cape Cod-bred bassist Kent Kessler, a mainstay in the Chicago music scene (DKV Trio, Brötzmann Tentet)!

ESCHATON (Hamilton)
Aaron Hutchinson (trumpet, synthesizer, electronics, percussion) and Connor Bennett (saxophone, bass, vocals) are Eschaton, a soulful Hamilton noise duo, whose music is driven by spontaneity and improvisation. Eschaton creates thick textural noise with vulnerable horn expressions, narrative soundscapes that breathe, bend and distort. They have released four cassettes, “\” and “>” in 2013 and “∆” and their 2/2014 tour tape out of the HAVN label and are on the upcoming Perdu Hamilton release “~ Vol. I ~”.

Tickets $12+s/c at Dr. Disc, Hammer City Records, Picks & Sticks and online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/690771

THE TINY ORCHESTRA TRIO (Toronto)
The Tiny Orchestra Trio  has been playing together since the last century. Part jazz trio, part parade band, their sounds emanate from intuitive call and response. They have recorded three collections, Nut Music, Holiday, and Mindfield, available from Bandcamp. John Halfpenny (drums, percussion) has also played solo as The Tiny Orchestra, using game calls, synth, reeded teapots, bottles, kalimba and pedals to imply a sense of melody. As a performer, he has played with Tomasz Krakowiak and William Davison, Nicole Rampersaud and Paul Dutton, Christine Duncan and Mary Margaret O’Hara, Germaine Liu, Joe Sorbara and other players focused around AimToronto. Steve Whitehouse (alto sax, tubes, pedals/live samples) has eclectic tastes in music and has played in many different contexts from the most inside to the farthest out. As well as TOT he currently plays with Reiner Schwarz and The Neil Young’uns. Paul Teglas (trombone, conch, keyboards) is a painter and print-maker. He embraces the synaesthetic world of sound as a personal playground.

SAME OLD THING (Hamilton)
Hamilton’s very own improvising ensemble comprised of younger, experimental music warriors.  The personnel fluctuates between 5 and 30… with distinct focus on game pieces, group composition and improvisation, they explore the musical landscape, contemplating, prodding and pushing to expand their aural and conceptual boundaries.  Ruthie Pytka-Jones — vocals; Riley Keller — saxophones; Sean Dowhaniuk – electric guitar; Kevin Fraser — baritone guitar; Mike Deicont — basses; Mike Rajna — drums; Pat Armstrong — percussion

GOLDEN STATE (Brooklyn/Amsterdam/San Diego)
Harris Eisenstadt (drums, compositions) with Michael Moore (clarinet), Sara Schoenbeck (bassoon) and Mark Dresser (bass) present a delicate blend of fresh composition and improvisation. Eisenstadt's eclectic resume includes studies and performances with some of the most respected names in jazz and improvised music, West African and Cuban drumming, in genres ranging from film and theater to poetry and dance to contemporary classical and opera. Schoenbeck has done much to champion the bassoon, rarely utilized in a jazz setting and has worked with Anthony Braxton for years. Veteran master musicians Dresser and Moore have played with everyone imaginable in creative music... and then some! Dresser was a part of Anthony Braxton's famous quartet for many years with Gerry Hemingway and Marilyn Crispell. Moore has been a part of the Dutch music scene for decades as a member of Instant Composers' Pool, the Clusone Trio and many others. British jazz critic Brian Morton writes, “what’s immediately clear, beyond the rigour and intelligence of Eisenstadt’s writing, is that a conversation is taking place, a free exchange of soloistic positions.”

SUN ROOMS (Chicago/Austin/Oslo)
Sun Rooms is the appropriate name vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz has given to his remarkable trio with Norwegian bassist Ingebrigt Håker-Flaten and drummer Mike Reed. Sublime writing, naturalistic playing and seemingly effortless group interaction are the hallmarks to this group's success. Ben Ratliff writes in the New York Times that Adasiewicz “writes lovely tunes … nobody here grandstands, fusses over details, or wastes time …“ and praises the trio’s influences, which encompass Sun Ra, Eric Dolphy and Duke Ellington.
See more bio info below, as Sun Rooms also plays June 20th a double-bill with Interstellar Orchestra.

SUN ROOMS (Chicago/Austin/Oslo)
See more band info above… as Sun Rooms also plays June 19th on a double-bill with Golden State.
Vibraphonist, drummer and composer Jason Adasiewicz is an integral member of Chicago’s jazz and improvised music scene, bringing his aggressive yet lyrical style to over 10 working groups including Mike Reed’s Loose Assembly, Peter Brötzmann/Jason Adasiewicz Duo, Nicole Mitchell’s Ice Crystals, Rob Mazurek’s Starlicker, Josh Berman and His Gang, Ingebrigt Häker Flaten Chicago Sextet, James Falzone’s Klang and Ken Vandermark’s Topology and Audio One. Bassist Ingebrigt Håker-Flaten is a muscular player whose tone and attack run the gamut from Paul Chambers to Buschi Niebergall, his sense of both openness and control serves ensembles as diverse as The Thing, Free Fall, Atomic, Scorch Trio and the Kornstad/Håker Flaten Duo. In addition to his own Chicago Sextet and Austin-centric Young Mothers, Flaten has also recorded and performed with Frode Gjerstad, Dave Rempis, Bobby Bradford, the AALY Trio, Ken Vandermark, Stephen Gauci, Tony Malaby, Daniel Levin, Dennis Gonzalez and numerous others. Drummer Mike Reed is the rhythmic catalyst in a number of Chicago’s most arresting ensembles, including the David Boykin Expanse, Rob Mazurek’s Exploding Star Orchestra, My Silence, and duos with Jeff Parker and Mars Williams. Reed has also shared the stage with many of his AACM mentors such as Roscoe Mitchell, Wadada Leo Smith, Nicole Mitchell and the late Fred Anderson.

INTERSTELLAR ORCHESTRA (Toronto)
Influenced by larger improvising ensembles like Globe Unity, Sun Ra, Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath, AACM big band and David Murray's octets, this 9-piece band daringly combines the talents of some of Toronto’s younger generation of jazz musicians. Formed in June 2013 by tenor and baritone saxophonist Jay Hay and drummer Mike Genarro as an extension of their long-standing duo, drawing on their pool of musical peers in Toronto’s jazz and creative music scene, cobbled together as a revolving line up of musicians to form an ever changing palette of sound and texture. The band’s repertoire comes mostly from its members; original compositions by Jay Hay and Tom Richards, as well as Don Cherry and even a Brazilian folk tune.  These composed elements are balanced with improvised interactions and conducted improvisation.  The result is an openness and freedom that allows the players to interact and an air of spontaneity to permeate the performance. “Given that this band contains some of the city’s finest players,” writes Toronto’s Joe Strutt on his blog Mechanical Forest Sound, “every show they play should be an event … do make a point of coming out and digging this.” with Nick Buligan – trumpet; Nicole Rampersaud – trumpet; Jeremy Strachan — tenor saxophone; Karen Ng — alto saxophone; Tom Richards – trombone; Heather Segger- trombone; Mike Smith – bass

MARY MARGARET O'HARA & AIDAN CLOSS' SPAR & AUTOMATIC (Toronto)
Vocalist Mary Margaret O'Hara is adored by a legion of fans for her songs and fierce independence. It's freedom she seeks and freedom she finds in improvising with her voice. Her duo project Spar and Automatic with multi-instrumentalist Aidan Closs finds O'Hara at the height of her powers as an artist, as they have developed such short-hand, such rapport with one another, so as not to let anything stop their dialogue of exploration through the abyss...

RONLEY TEPER & HER LIPLINERS (Toronto)
At once a storyteller, a performance artist, and a singer/songwriter, Ronley Teper combines these disciplines into provocative stage shows as a ringleader with the help of her band, The Lipliners. The Lipliners began as a monthly residency at the legendary Tranzac club in Toronto. Teper invited some of Toronto’s finest musicians to improvise around her storytelling and songwriting. Over the past decade this process has developed a body of work that listeners often compare to Tom Waits, Frank Zappa and Laurie Anderson. Ronley Teper — vocals, guitar; Tim Posgate — guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle; Alexis Marsh — various instruments; Chris Banks — bass; Chris Pruden — keyboards; Ben Bowen — trumpet; Beth Washburn — cornet, alto tuba; Aly Livingston — flute; D Alex Meeks — drums; Peter O’Neill — projections

Congrats on pulling this together Cem.

I've often thought that I would love to do something like this down where I am, but it seems so daunting since I have no background in music promotion, or much else to do with music for that matter.

Thank you! If I can sort of do it, anyone can. No experience necessary. You have to have $, access to funding/sponsorship, be well organized, well-connected, be slightly insane. You need at least two of those to succeed. I'm coasting on the last one alone, really… So, I'm certain you can pull it off. Key thing is to be selective and not do too much, surround yourself with a good group of people --skilled, enthusiastic board and volunteers. Good luck!

I've been trying to get something going for a couple of years in terms of creating a not-for-profit structure but have run into some unreliable people on the creative side. It being a small community, it's difficult to shift gears without causing some hard feelings.

You actually don't need to focus on the structure. Even house concerts may be a way to get it off the ground, just to suss things out. If you have an idea of the interest already, rent an appropriate venue and get the word out and that should be a good start. Trick, I think, is to just do it and not get caught up on things… just keep going.

I really hope that things went well on Monday, Cem.

When/if you have a moment, please give us a brief comment or two about how things have been thus far.

More great music on the schedule for tonight!

Very nice night Monday… both bands sounded great! I'm happy with a half-full room (capacity 100 or so). Good audience. Standing O, not the obligatory kind. To be clear, I'm doing this pretty much knowing that it will be a financial loss. Just wanting to keep the loss to a minimum. Without this test, one cannot gauge the interest here. It's a rock town. And I had to make a bit of a splash with a festival, so as not to get lost in the shuffle. Original plan was for 1-3 nights and 2-3 bands. Now it's an even 10 sets! Too much, maybe. We'll see…

Sounds like a reasonable beginning, Cem.

I hope things are even better tonight.

I like the way your music events are structured, and the care you give to graphics and other artful touches.

Thank you, Ron. Sometimes I do wish that I could afford a graphics person and a publicist. Those tasks take me forever and I'm never fully satisfied with the results, always think that I could do more. I'm just glad that the whole thing is happening where we live. Feeling more at home here already.
