I was late to this party. I signed up for the free version a while ago via facebook and when I didn't get it to work immediately I forgot about it.
Just yesterday when some brilliant dude here started a thread about how we listen to music these days and I thought about how much I stream, I decided to give the 4.99 version a try.
After some initial frustration caused by conflicting emails and passwords from my prior account, I am digging it big time.
It seems amazing to me that from my chair I can listen to virtually whatever I want to hear. I even decided to follow whoever it suggested I follow (as far as other members, not musicians). Since I apparently used my Steve Thelil FB account, it has recommended a bunch of yous guys and girls to follow. It's fun to try out whatever my friends have just listened to, since it's so easy and no commitment. I would have NEVER guessed that I would like this feature.
SCOTT DOLAN: I remember you being bummed when Apple changed the size of the connector for the new iPhone 5, making it require an additional purchase if you want to use it with your existing docking speaker, like the Bose.
Without rehashing this discussion, I want to add that I dealt with this not by buying a hardware adapter, but by buying a thingie that you stick on the dock and it turns the docking speaker into a Bluetooth speaker. I think it cost me less than $20.
Anyway, with this bluetooth adaptor thingy, spotify and my new macbook (my first bluetooth laptop) I am having a blast commandeering my Bose Dock with my Spotify account on my computer!!!
Here's an Amazon link to a bunch of these adaptors. Mine is the Paxtuon adaptor for 16.99

So, with the paid version of Spotify do you actually get more content as far as albums and artists?
I agree it's annoying, but I would have wanted the BT adapter anyway so I can use my laptop with the Bose Dock, which i wouldn't have before (because a long wire would be a hassle). And I prefer to use the dock with the iPhone via BT also, so I can have the phone in hand instead of physically connected to the dock.
As far as the difference between the free and 4.99 Spotify. I assumed it was something like Pandora, where you get no ads with the paid version. (The Pandora ads were starting to annoy me, but I didn't spring for the paid Pandora) But now that you ask, I'm embarrassed to say I really have no idea what the difference is between the free and 4.99 Spotify.

I guess the main difference between the free and 4.99 versions is the absence of ads AND the fact that the free version won't let you listen to a track more than a certain number of times (10 iirc).
I mainly use Spotify (the free version) to instantly access something I don't have at hand or that I'm pointed to. I've never listened to a track more than twice on it and have never heard an ad either...

Spotify
"Unlimited" $5/mo
Listen on your desktop & laptop
Millions of songs — just hit play
No ads & no commitment
"Premium" $10/mo
Listen on all your devices
Download music & listen offline
No ads & no commitment
I don't know about Spotify, but Pandora 'premium' gives you higher quality streams in addition to no ads. I pay for it cuz it's only $36/year.

Re: Spotify !!!
The $9.99 has a higher bitrate (goes from 160 kbps to 320 kbps).
I love Spotify but if I have a problem, it is the lack of independent jazz releases and other of the less popular forms of music (I assume because of the lack of pay involved).
