Considering that this is Washington, DC, winter has just begun, there are similar forecasts
for the rest of the week, and much of the ice on the ground isn't melting, it's more than a
trivial annoyance, really (especially because I don't drive).

After five years, my mouse was so shot that it was yielding the wrong results (a long story). Having failed to find a suitable replacement online (an even longer story), I looked through my rejected electronics collection and found a Logitech optical mouse that still works just fine. However, I was immediately reminded that I'd rejected it because (for me) it's so frackin' uncomfortable to hold.
(Thanks, but no recs, please; I need to keep looking on my own. Maybe I'll have better luck if I visit a bricks-and-mortar store.)
