Favorite TV Show Theme Music

Postby stonemonkts » October 12th, 2013, 1:59 pm

I've always appreciated the themes used for certain shows over the years, sometimes to the point of tears (don't laugh you fuckers).

My all time favorite:

High on my list would be the theme used in Reilly: Ace of Spies, which was taken from Shostakovitch's The Gadfly Suite:

Homicide: Life on the Street

Not a pretty theme, but good nonetheless

Couldn't find just the theme (they have episodes of this on utube in theur entirety!) but this one always gave me tingles (probably from knowing how fucking great the production was, having seen it at least six times)

Sometimes themes are clever, fitting in perfectly with the show. The whimsical sound of the piano as the theme to Doc Martin starts puts a smile on my face

Deadwood was pretty evocative

Which almost reminded me of Firefly end credits

Amazing how the theme for a show you love can give you a Pavlov's dog-like reaction and get you excited and pumped. I remember The Saprano's theme doing that. The short theme for Peep Show works for me too.

The whole theme was very good, but the line "they're altogether ooky" is one of my favorites of all time.

AND as a special bonus, a google search of "they're altogether ooky" brought the following!

Deadwood and Firefly, two shows that ended prematurely.

That's probably just a persistent typo, but in the original, as in the Palin parody, the word is "ooky," to rhyme with "kooky" and "spooky."

From the '60s--so many! I Love Lucy, DICK VAN DYKE, Get Smart...

More recently--The Sopranos, Mad Men--my current favorite theme, what there is of it--and the wonderful Six Feet Under, by Thomas Newman.

Thanks for noticing. It was a damned autocorrect mistake I didn't notice.

I always liked the theme from M*A*S*H. For those of you who aren't aware, the tune has lyrics written by Mash director Robert Altman's son Mike. I found it interesting that the kid wrote the lyrics when he was 14 years old. I have a cd with Sue Raney singing those lyrics. It was the only version of the song that I was able to find. Here's a little background on the song.

Holy shit, I just clicked on "other versions" on the Wikipedia write-up and saw a bunch of covers of the song including Sue Raney's. She's in good company. I didn't realize there were so many.

Bill Evans did a mighty fine version--instrumental, of course--of the theme from MASH.

Yes, I noticed that on the Wikipedia site. It also listed covers by Grady Tate (singing, of course) and Ahmad Jamal among many others.

Speaking of old and British, I liked the music (as well as everything else) in Brideshead Revisited. Not spectacular, but nice. Same guy (Geoffrey Turgeon?) did the music to one of my favorite movies, Turtle Diary.

The theme to House of Cards is kind of catchy.
Surely not all of a sudden. Less than half of a sudden at best.
