Rock songs you liked or noticed before you got into rock?

Postby steve(thelil) » November 19th, 2013, 5:42 am

What rock (OR QUASI ROCK) songs did you notice as a little kid before you were into rock?

For me I think it was mostly novelty records. Probably because they were played on easy listening stations that I would have been exposed to from nearby grownups.

Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini
Purple People Eater
The Witch Doctor.

Also, I remember when my grandparents took me to a Catskills hotel and seeing the teens dance to "Mashed Potato Time." I remember being intrigued by the line "Gimme Gimme Gimme Gimme Gravy Tonight"

I had the advantage of living with a sister who is 10 years older, so in 1960 I was hearing all sorts of great 45s....the first one that grabbed me and had me dancing with glee was Chubby Checker - Twist.

For people of my era it might be a different question, because top 40 radio didn't become mostly rock until after the Beatles broke in the US, so exposure to rock before that was less of a given. For you kids (heh heh), I assume you couldn't help being exposed to rock before you decided to follow music.
