SoundCloud Jazz Clips

Postby Ron Thorne » July 17th, 2014, 3:33 pm

Now that we have this new feature, I want to share some music from one of our own ... Phil Kelly, aka graypencil. Phil is a superb composer/arranger, and I discovered this recent arrangement on Phil's Facebook page and was anxious to share it. Phil's background arrangements on this CD are symphonic orchestral in style.

The singer is Primo Kim, a Seattle-based vocalist/pianist.

Here's another arrangement by Phil, from the same album of Primo Kim ... Make It Right.

Great stuff--I love Phil's work.

Last night, I got a big surprise--the soundman from the San Pancho Music Festival sent me a track from my Puerto Vallarta band's performance last February, and it's pretty cool.

My arrangement, which I like to call WHATTAMELON, MAN!, performed by IGUANAS RANAS (Willow on guitar; Jesus 'Chuy' Estrada, drums; Enrique Villalobos, congas; Roberto Falcon, bass; me on synth and organ). Lovely, open-sounding live recording, no?

Thanks, Ron--

That group included what became the Doug Robinson Trio, with Roberto on bass and Chuy on drums. One of my best-ever groups, that trio.
