My first gig with my brand new group: Iguanas Ranas (Mexican slang for "Igualmente" or "Likewise!").
Sadly, the guitarist was out of the frame but still a tad too hot in the mix, which creates a slightly odd sensation. But the performances are good and I'm proud of us all. And for you keyboard geeks--that's my new Hammond SK1-73. The organ is sensational, but so are the other voices--this is a Wurlitzer sample.
The tune is my composition New York Blues, which I first recorded as a swinging minor blues in 1997 with Mike Stern, John Patitucci and Ben Perowsky. I've done different versions with three other bands--a gentler swing with Jazzooo, AfroCuban 6/8 with Medianoche, and now this version which combines the AfroCuban vibe with a half time shuffle.
Disfruten, amigos!

Yeah, Ron--I'm really digging Snarky Puppy. I'm only just now discovering them--I think the name made me think of them as some kind of alt/punk band, so they stayed off my radar till now.

Doug, I had a somewhat similar experience. I wish they had chosen a different name.
Many of these guys have been together for 10 years! Bassist/composer Michael League and many of his band of musical adventurers spent time at the Univ. of North Texas, a terrific laboratory for jazz players.

Relatively unknown Sonny Rollins performance reminiscent of his early 60s The Bridge days when he replaced piano with guitar. Τhis time a young Bobby Broom takes the place of Jim Hall but the great Bob Cranshaw on bass -- who's been with Rollins on and off for 5 decades -- remains a staple on both outfits. Filmed live at the third Montreal International Jazz Festival on July 4, 1982.

Well, to say that Hans Groiner's approach to Monk is "original" would be an understatement. Even Hans has difficulty maintaining a straight face at times.
He's a breath of fresh air, however.

I thought the funniest thing about the video was the comments on youtube where people were blasting him for not "getting" Monk. Some people need their sense of humour over-hauled

A couple of videos of my trio from Sunday night's got--Blue Monk and I'll Take Les.
The sound is a little low, so you might have to turn it up a tad.
The cameraman was the bassist's girlfriend...enough said.
There is some chatter close to the mic here and there but it goes away. Good drummer, good chemistry. Pulled back energy because we were in a restaurant, but still a nice look at what I'm doing musically right now.
I'm working on not worrying so much about accuracy and just going for it as a player.
Oh, and there's an edit in Blue Monk where I removed the bass solo--it wouldn't upload, too long.
The second one is a big file, so let it load for a few minutes first. Thanks for watching!
