Convince me otherwise please?

Which musicians leave you cold & why?
You know they're well respected, work their asses off, can be found on numerous recordings.
Prime example for me is saxophonist Eric Alexander.
Seen him in action quite a few times; highly respected by his peers, runs up and down the horn with complete ease and command.
For the most part, I just don't care for him.
Convince me otherwise please?

Maybe if you saw him with Terence Blanchard he'd look better. (I'm from the Old School that says no musician deserves disparagement,but Blanchard leaves me cold.

I've like some of Terence over the years.
I'd have to say that over the past maybe 8-10 years has put out out one fabulous project after another. He's an amazing composer too.
I've interviewed him a couple of times including last month.
His return to Blue Note with this album is a very strong recording IMO and the core of this band has been with him for a while now; some very fine musicians.

well, shoot...i really like all three of those guys. i've heard a lot of eric over the years, has a great tone, phrases intelligently, has an obvious depth in the tradition.
terence i have also heard quite a bit...like most of his work ("over there" seemed to drag a bit).
mark i've mostly heard as sideman...llistening to atrio now on youtube...very soulful:

Wayne Shorter's music of the last 15-20 years leaves me cold. I wouldn't argue with anyone who considers it brilliant, but I don't relate emotionally.
I used to feel that way about Dave Douglas, but I after seeing him live several times, I saw one show that grabbed me, and after that he recordings made more of a connection with me as well.
I know this is a jazz discussion, but U2 has never grabbed me, either.

I like everything about those groups except for Turner. I just don't think his solos go anywhere and that his tone isn't big enough to hold his own in a group format.
Maybe I'm missing something.
BTW, I think I saw Fly with you at Yoshi's, Mike!

Funny. I thought of TALES FROM THE HUDSON as an album that was widely beloved that left me cold. I don't recall why, but I'm under the impression that even many of the people who championed that album and that group no longer feel that strongly about it.

True, but at least this discussion acknowledges the role of subjectivity and hit hasn't deteriorated into one of those "My tastes are better than your tastes" threads.

Thanks, jbc. I was trying to find a "good" way to put those same thoughts. Also don't care much for Eric Alexander, either.
Am I the only one around here who doesn't like Keith Jarrett?

This is Michael's final album.
He was in remission for a time before his final demise when these sessions were recorded. Everyone plays their asses off and brought the collective A++ game.
I'd venture to say it's his masterwork.
I'm not a fan of all things he did, but certainly enjoyed a portion of his catalogue, this one is tops to me for sure.
If you can't dig this one, then we'll have to permanently agree to disagree

I LOVE Blanchard!
Mark Turner played with Dave Holland's Quintet earlier this year and sounded great. I also liked him with Kurt Rosenwinkel.
Love Jarrett.

I'm with you on both Blanchard and Jarrett, Peter.
I had a chance to meet and speak with Terence a few years ago, and found him engaging, patient and totally approachable. It was a gas!
I'm still waiting for my chance to hear Keith in a live setting and monitor the grunt quotient.
