Jazz in the Boston Area

I hope that friends in the area will add to these localized jazz threads. Here's a start to this one, where Berklee College of Music is offering a number of choices for jazz fans, leading up to the BeanTown Jazz Festival in September. The 1st 5 words of this press release are hysterical.

Yes, I realize that every performer in this series does not fit within the definition of "jazz".

Berklee Summer in the City

Image

As the weather warms up, join Berklee students, alumni, and faculty for a free outdoor music series held in neighborhoods throughout Metro Boston and beyond. The series culminates with the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival on September 28.

“Summer in the City is one of our very best contributions to the local community – the world’s next great artists performing throughout Boston all summer long. You can be among the first to see their careers take flight,” said Berklee President Roger H. Brown. Past performers have included Esperanza Spalding, Dopapod, and the Stray Birds, to name a few.

Summer in the City concerts bring neighborhoods to life with free programs of pop, rock, jazz, Latin, blues, flamenco, and Celtic music. The Boston-area concerts take place in destinations throughout the city from the Rose Kennedy Greenway, Institute of Contemporary Art, the Boston Harbor Islands, and the Boston Common’s newly renovated Brewer Fountain Plaza to communities with strong cultural identities ranging from Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, East Boston, and the South End.

Aug 29 at 8 p.m. only is pianist Marc Cary (solo piano) and his tribute to Abbey Lincoln
September 6, a rare Boston appearance by pianist Jacky Terrasson!
Thursday, September 12 is trumpeter Nicholas Payton
...and wishing you could be here for this one, Ron Thorne:
Friday and Saturday September 27 and 28...GARY BURTON!!!!

Folks can check http://www.scullersjazz.com for more info, including October's schedule or check the Scullers facebook page:

Speaking of Peet's coffee (in another thread), Boston area does have Peet's to go with your jazz.

Unfortunately, I don't have any clients left in Boston. So I seldom get to visit. :(

sadly, all the good gigs at Scullers are either before or after my two-week trip in August. but just to rub it in for Ron, I did have the pleasure of Gary Burton's musical company for an entire week earlier this year on The Jazz Cruise!! ;)

Well, Valerie, I hope you enjoyed Gary as much as I would have. He's a pretty special musician.

I'm going to try and give this thread a jump start, along with some others in need.

East Bay Soul | Scullers Jazz Club this Friday evening at 8 and 10 p.m.

GREG ADAMS & EAST BAY SOUL – JUNE 14

Greg Adams’ musical journey has spanned nearly four decades. A founding member of Tower Of Power,
legendary for the horn arrangements that made the TOP horn section a sought out entity all its own,
Greg is the driving force behind East Bay Soul. The expansive ensemble creates a union that has been
nothing short of musically miraculous. With extraordinary combined talents and the incredible energy
they each bring to the music, East Bay Soul is dedicated to a singular vision of bringing their brand of
funk and the magic of their live performance.

Looking forward to having East Bay Soul back in 'da house at Scullers this coming Friday.

Scullers is closed in July and Fourplay will be the last group to perform on June 27/28 before the month long hiatus. One show I'm really looking forward to on August 15 is Delfeayo Marsalis, John Clayton and Marvin "Smitty" Smith.

BeBop, there are some other possibilities in and around Boston in July.

Jazz in July

This is a good local site to get listings that are usually not widely published.

http://www.jazzboston.org/

The calendar lists shows by night. In the 'Scene' tab there is a listing of venues in the greater Boston area.

Charlie Kohlhase plays on July 18th. He's playing at a place I've never been http://www.outpost186.com/ so I can't really tell you what to expect for a venue.

If you've never been to Wally's Cafe it's a historical jazz spot near Berklee School of Music. It's very tiny. I recommend the Sunday jam.

Good luck, enjoy your stay!

Scott Feiner is a remarkable musician, and one of the very few professional pandeiro players in the U.S. I bought my pandeiro from Scott several years ago and have since been watching and listening to his amazing achievements with this extraordinary instrument.

I highly recommend trying to catch him at one of these performances or taking his clinic if inclined. You won't regret it.

I've seen Marco Pignataro play with Eddie Gomez twice in the last year at the Lilypad. He's on Eddie's latest CD, too. Really good player.
