I'll be at the Ron Carter date at the Caverns on 5/24 if anyone else is going. Actually I'll be there regardless.

Monte, is he touring with his trio or a larger band? Either way, it should be terrific.

It should be the Ron Carter Golden Striker Trio - Russell Malone on guitar and now Donald Vega (previously Mulgrew Miller) on piano.

Monte, I can't go, but I might stop by and say hello (having first discreetly identified you by yelling, "Hey! Who here is Monte Smith?").

Missed you, Rita.

The set was great. Carter, Donald Vega on piano, Russell Malone on guitar.

"Autumn Leaves"
"Laverne Walk" (Pettiford)
"Candlelight" (Jim Hall)
"My Funny Valentine"
"Soft Winds" (F. Henderson)

It was a short set, about an hour, which frankly I prefer to a marathon. Carter was selling a new biography, too, FINDING THE RIGHT NOTES. I passed on it, respectfully, as I might need that money to see Houston Person at the same venue in June.

Some of the promo material indicates an ending time of 7PM rather than 6:30PM.

http://cuneiformrecord.blogspot.com/2014/06/the-kandinsky-effect-in-dc-june-18-2014.html

Excerpts (with boldface omitted) from the accompanying blurb:
On Wednesday, June 18th, one of the most exciting young jazz/electronica groups on the international 'post-jazz' scene - The Kandinsky Effect - will perform live at a FREE outdoor concert held at United Therapeutics' BioWall Plaza, a new urban space in downtown Silver Spring. The Kandinsky Effect's members are based in New York City and Paris, France; this will be the transatlantic trio's first-ever Washington D.C. area appearance. The trio use sax, bass, drums and electronics to merge acoustic and electronic sounds, creating music that is both energized and entrancing, danceable and compelling. Igloo Magazine called them "..full of creativity, individuality, expressivity and outside of the box thinking," and noted that their music "will appeal to fans of Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada, but also to fans of Squarepusher’s older work and of course to jazz aficionados...." Fans of music as wide ranging as indie and progressive rock can also find something to enjoy in this energetic and dynamic group. . . .

BioWall Plaza is walking distance from the Red Line/Silver Spring Metro, and near metered street parking and county parking garages. Food is available for sale at nearby restaurants and food trucks. . . .

BioWall Plaza is part of a new headquarters complex, notable for its striking contemporary architecture and “green” design, being built by biotech company United Therapeutics on downtown Silver Spring’s northern edge.

Cutting-edge music - and architecture - is thriving on the edge of downtown Silver Spring MD. Several Silver Spring-based music companies are helping drive DC's status as a mecca for innovative, experimental music. This year - 2014 - marks avant garde record label Cuneiform Records' 30th anniversary in downtown Silver Spring, and as part of its anniversary celebrations, it joins forces with concert presenter Sonic Circuits (coordinators of an experimental music festival in DC and a music series at Pyramid Atlantic) as Music Lab to invite the public to experience adventurous music and architecture first-hand.

"Transatlantic sax-bass-drums trio...adept at mixing creative jazz and electronics...
Ghostly washes of sound echo and float...otherworldly ambient treatment... 4/5 stars"
-All Music Guide

"...drawing its inspiration from contemporary dance and electronic musics, as well as from jazz... an egalitarian mix of acoustic and electronic sounds. The Kandinsky Effect manages this tricky combination with confidence, crafting music that stimulates the brain and the dancing shoes simultaneously."

I don't think that's happening. It's no longer on her website (nor is it on Bohemian Caverns' calendar, but that means little).

Thanks for thinking of me, Valerie! I know that her shows have your initials on them. I'm rarely drawn to vocalists, but I've started to check out videos of her.

As you probably know, she's got four (rather pricey, comparatively) shows coming up in Costa Mesa, on November 14 and 15. I hope a road trip will be in the realm of possibility for you.

Re: Jazz in Washington, DC, Area ~ Big Band

Postby DIS » November 25th, 2014, 9:07 am

We're back! Big Band Tradition, an 18-piece big band with vocalist, will perform on Sunday, 30 November, from 5:00 to 8:00 at the New Deal Café in Greenbelt, MD. That's a short distance from University of Maryland's College Park. The band plays a mix of swing era and modern material with perhaps more emphasis on the latter.

Come early--we pack the place! No cover charge, gratuities appreciated, food and drinks available.

Thursday, December 4. 8 & 9:30 pm
Ran Blake, solo jazz piano
Rare Performance!

In a career that spans five decades, pianist/composer/educator RAN BLAKE has created a unique niche in improvised music as an artist and educator. With a characteristic mix of spontaneous solos, modern classical tonalities, the great American blues and gospel traditions, and themes from classic Film Noir, Blake’s singular sound has earned a dedicated following all over the world. His dual musical legacy includes more than 40 albums on some of the world’s finest jazz labels, as well over 40 years as a groundbreaking educator at Boston’s New England Conservatory.

In the tradition of Blake’s idols, Chris Connor, Duke Ellington, Mahalia Jackson, Jeanne Lee, Abbey Lincoln, Thelonious Monk, George Russell, & Gunther Schuller, he has incorporated and synthesized several otherwise divergent styles and influences into a single innovative and cohesive style all his own, ranking him among the geniuses of the genre. The addition of his innovative aural based teaching approach, and the forty years he has spent influencing future generations of musicians, makes his contributions to the long tradition of jazz even more impressive.

A recent Downbeat review said, “Ran Blake is so hip it hurts … a pianist who can make you laugh at his dry humor one second and wring a tear the next.” His music still sounds fresh and unmistakably unique. Nearly fifty years after his innovative release, The Newest Sound Around with vocalist Jeanne Lee (RCA-Victor), Ran continues to evolve his noir language on the piano, making him one of most resilient artists in jazz history.

Ran’s most recent recordings are Cocktails at Dusk: A Tribute to Chris Connor with Ricky Ford and Laïka Fatien (impulse!/ Sunnyside, 2014), Live at the Kitano, NY with Sara Serpa (Sunnyside, anticipated 2015), and Down Here Below, vol. 2: A Tribute to Abbey Lincoln with Christine Correa (RedPiano, anticipated 2015), and Chabrol Noir: A Tribute to Claude Chabrol with Ricky Ford (impulse!/ Sunnyside, anticipated 2015).

You can learn more about Ran at his website http://www.ranblake.com, which includes videos of musical performance and other tantalizing noir treats.
