This episode of Jazz@Eastman – Past, Present, and Future features recordings from a three-day residency with pianist and composer Jim McNeely.

Grammy-award winning composer and pianist Jim McNeely is likely best known for his work with the historic Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. A Chicago native, McNeely moved to New York City in 1975 and over the last 40 years has risen to the forefront of jazz performance and education.

In December 2014, Jim McNeely joined the Eastman School of Music department of Jazz And Contemporary Media for a three-day residency that consisted of small ensemble coaching, composition workshops, lectures and a concert of McNeely’s original works with the Eastman Jazz Ensemble.

Jim McNeely moved to New York City in 1975 after receiving his degree at the University of Illinois. During his residency at Eastman, McNeely spoke about his college experiences, early experiences in New York City, and shared advice he has picked up over the course of his career.

A dedicated educator, McNeely serves on the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music and William Patterson University, and is the Music Director of the BMI Jazz Composers’ Workshop.
