Great responses and recs, plenty of stuff to look into, exactly what I was hoping for, thx guys! The mention of Gerry Mulligan reminded me of his variation on a classic; 1992's 'Re-Birth Of The Cool'. A beautifully recorded record featuring a few of the original players and Phil Woods filling for Lee Konitz plus Wallace Roney subbing for Miles. Interesting, reading the liner notes apparently GM told Miles he was planning on doing this project and Miles, who had just successfully revisited his Gil Evans work alongside Quincy Jones at Montreux, expressed interest in doing the record. But he ran outta time.

Mind you, I own tons of records of bands that consist of 8, 9, or 10 players, but I'm not talking about percussionists or multiple electric instrumentation!;) I'm talking basic rhythm section (piano, bass, drums) plus horns.
