It kind of seems that every time I post a video, we enter a period of no one else posting anything for a few days. I thought I'd bump my thread to see if I can break the streak.

Here's an interesting clip from a gig this past week at the Pony Bar in Hamburg, Germany featuring my buddy, drummer Danny Gottlieb. The musicality and endurance displayed by him never ceases to amaze me.

Go Danny!

And hey, my strategy worked. :)

Trilok Gurtu Quartet feat. Nils Petter Molvaer - Festival Jazz en Baie 2013

You'll need to turn the volume up for the music and down for the ads.

Drummers ... be prepared to burn your stick bag and everything in it! This young man, Kojo Odu Roney, the nephew of Wallace Roney, is a prodigy. He has performed with some giants already, including his uncle last night at Smalls Jazz Club in New York. I missed that, but found this amazing clip of an appearance a couple of months ago at The Village Vanguard, sitting in with Al Foster. Seeing and hearing is believing. He's 9 years of age!

Image The video clip was also posted on a website called Giant Step, but that's not Giant Steps.

Kojo is somethin' else; I wish that the drums weren't so dominant in the mix throughout the video clip, but then I'm not a drummer. Image

Thanks, Ron! I'll listen to the archived clip of the Roneys at Smalls last night when it becomes available online.

I was wondering who was gonna bust my chops on that faux pas. Yes, it's the website name.

I'm still in delirious "Poppy" land, thinking mostly of our brand new grandson whose photos we just received.

I may know less about jazz than many (all?) of the other posters here, but by carbonate of soda, I know "Giant Steps."

Re #115: That's my belated first exposure to Ellery's current approach as a leader. (I still haven't heard his Trio New York, in which Gary Versace on Hammond B3 organ is joined by Gerald Cleaver on drums.) It's going to take some getting used to!

Meet Kojo Roney

May 26, 2014 by Doug Ramsey

With hardly a week going by in which we don’t lose a venerable musician, it may be natural to wonder whether the art form will wither. That is unlikely. New players emerge and enrich the music. It is rare, however, that they emerge quite as young as Kojo Roney of the Philadelphia Roneys. He is the son of tenor saxophonist Antoine and a nephew of trumpeter Wallace. He plays drums. He is nine years old. He recently sat in for Al Foster at the Village Vanguard in New York. Although the rest of the group is muffled in this video [the video posted in #111, from 3/16/14], young Mr. Roney is not. The piece he plays with the unidentified musicians is Victor Feldman’s "Seven Steps to Heaven."

One observer at the Vanguard speculated that Kojo Roney is channeling Tony Williams (1945-1997), who made the original recording of "Seven Steps to Heaven" with Miles Davis in 1963. It will be interesting to see how Kojo develops.

Indeed, she is a monster. I am just starting to really listen to Ingrid and I really like her approach to improv. I particularly like her use of dynamics, very nice soft sounds but she can (and does) roar as well.

This weekend marks Summer Solstice, and the Midnight Sun is evident where I live. Found this beauty today and sent it along to our friend Helge (Sand) in Norway.

Here's our friend, Joe Carter in a duo setting with bassist Jeff Fuller, performing Joao Donato's tune Amazonas recently at the Windsor Art Center in Windsor, CT.

Here's a very tasteful rendering of a song made very popular by Bonnie Raitt, followed by more great taste from Kenny Washington.
