Re One Great Night (#464):

Scott Dolan wrote:Holy moly!

Haven't heard this, but the players involved tell me it's incredible.

Image Ellery, Andrea, and Jim tell you that their album is incredible?

It's an excellent album, recorded in 2007 and released in 2009. I believe it was that trio's most recent (and presumably last) album together. I saw only one show of theirs (IIRC) and wish I'd become aware of them earlier.

Read it literally! I just got it---you can tell from the players involved that the album is incredible.

Just picked this up a few days ago and have been really diggin' it!
Henry Butler/Steve Bernstein & the Hot 9 - Viper's Drag!
Butler's a legendary 'Nawlins pianist. Bernstein's resume includes stints with the Sex Mob and the Levon Helms band along with co-producing the soundtrack from Robert Altman's Kansas City (a favorite of mine!)

Gonna give the video thing a shot, hope it works (thx Ron!)

Scott Dolan wrote:Interestingly enough I think women, in general, are producing some really fine music these days.

Just look at some of the finer offerings in Pop Music this past year. Lorde, Aluna George, The Dum Dum Girls, and Haim all released some really outstanding albums.

The boys have some serious catching up to do!

I'm not too familiar with the happenings in the pop world, but it does seem like there are some real female leaders emerging in the improv area. I don't have first hand experience (obviously) but it seems as though women have had a hard time being taken seriously in jazz and/or improv in the past so it's nice to see some breakthrough in this regard. A long way to go yet, but some progress. It's for this reason that I don't engage in any discussions of appearance where female musicians are concerned. They've had a hard enough time to be taken seriously as artists that I don't want to contribute to anything that might lead to a perception that their appearance has anything to do with their success.

Fred, if you had to pick your favorite from among the 3 Joe Henry albums, which would it be?

  1. Blood from Stars
  2. Reverie
  3. Invisible Hour

I haven't heard any of these three yet, but I have several earlier albums.
