What's your favorite Joe Bim song?
What's your favorite Joe Bim song?
I'm curious, what's your favorite song by A.C. Jobim? I'm sometime surprised by people who request his songs. The casual listener seems to sometimes know and like the more obscure Jobim gem. For me, I think it's still Dindi, "Ahhh ... Din - di ..."
For years I thought he wrote this for a woman but after reading his biography, I've come to find out it was written for a mountain range that he would see as he drove to his house in the country.
Dindi - A.C. Jobim & A. de Oliveira
Sky, so vast is the sky
And far away clouds just wandering by..
Where do they go?
Oh I don't know, don't know...
Wind that speaks to the leaves
Telling stories that no one believes
Stories of love
Belong to you and me....
Oh Dindi....
If I only had words
I would say all the beautiful things that I see
When you're with me
oh my Dindi
Oh Dindi...
Like the song of the wind in the trees
That's how my heart is singing Dindi, happy Dindi
When you're with me
I love you more today
Yes I do, yes I do
I'd let you go away
If you take me with you
Don't you know Dindi
I'd be running and searching for you
Like a river that can't find the see
That would be me
Without you my Dindi

"Waters of March" or anything sung by Gal Costa.

It's interesting that we're mentioning Gal Costa when we think of Jobim's music. I always thought of her as one of the best interpreters of his music. I know Jobim thought so. One of my favorite DVDs and CDs is Gal's Canta Tom Jobim.

Well, Joe, Dindi remains one of my all-time Jobim favorites, too. I hadn't read his biography so learning about the subject of that song from you was a revelation.
There are too many favorite Jobim tunes to list, but also among my favorites are:
Wave
Triste
Corcovado

For me, the definitive version is the Jobim and Elis Regina duet. It's one of my favorite songs by anyone.

I don't know that I can choose "a" favorite..... maybe Corcovado.
Re: What's your favorite Joe Bim song?
the Elis e Tom version of Aguas de Marco is definitely a classic. There's been an ongoing debate about whether the laughing and good humor on the recording was spontaneous or planned out beforehand. Elis had said she didn't want to record with Jobim, it was her record company that insisted. Either way the album is still one of my favorites and has been voted as one of the top 10 classic Brazilian recordings. Somehow I wind up with a different mastered version from my original copy. In the 2nd version you can hear Tom and Elis talking about the songs before the song begins. I don't remember how I acquired that version of the album.

Tom and Elis did a classic. Another I really like is Diz' take on Chega de Saudade, with the beach sounds.

according to ruy castro's bossa nova, the true story of brazilian music that seduced the world (a truly great read, highly recommended), elis thought jobim's music was old-fashioned and hopelessly square. perhaps that view softened a bit with time.

Nice one, John. I guess you have to be a certain age to get that one. And I guess I qualify.
Re: What's your favorite Joe Bim song?
My favorite to play is Wave. Sure, it's played a lot, but it's eminently sensible in construct for the improvisor.
Re: What's your favorite Joe Bim song?
Wave is a tough one for singers because of the wide range but, you're right Bebop, a great one to blow on. Some musicians look at it as a blues form with a bridge.

oscar peterson, among others, makes no attempt blow over the actual changes...great recording, though...just not really wave...

Love Jobim. For a favorite, I have to go to the classic Sinatra/Jobim record and probably "Corcovado."

Gene Lees did a fascinating series of articles about ACJ in his Jazz Letter. I don't know if copies of it are still around. I have them.

My favorite Joe Bim song is probably "A Felicidade" (Tristeza não tem fim,
Felicidade sim . . . ), but "Waters of March"/"Águas de Março" is a powerful earworm.

Oh yeah. "The world series of soft," I think the liner notes call it.
