"MusicHeads" with Patricia Barber
Internationally acclaimed jazz pianist Patricia Barber hosts WDCB's new three-part series "MusicHeads," recorded in the acoustically pristine PianoForte Studios in downtown Chicago. "MusicHeads" is airing three consecutive Wednesday nights at 9–10pm on January 14, 21, and 28, 2015 as part of WDCB's weekly Chicago Jazz Spotlight series.
In the first show (which aired on Wednesday, January 14, is archived at the site linked above, and is posted in the SoundCloud clip below), Barber explores the question "What Is Swing?" It also looks at what is meant when one says "music swings" and examines how musicians actually make music swing. Helping Patricia swing on this show are bassist Larry Kohut, drummer Jon Deitemyer, and saxophonist Jim Gailloreto. In future weeks, Barber and guests will explore "The Piano as Percussion" (January 21) and "The Double Bass" (January 28).
"This is musical exploration on a high level," says WDCB Station Manager Dan Bindert. "The opportunity to have someone of Patricia's caliber host a radio show for WDCB is incredible, but what's so interesting to me is that it's not just a display of her considerable talent. She explores her own musical curiosity in a very creative way in these shows and we get to come along with her to experience the process."
WDCB is "Chicago's Home for Jazz" and can be heard locally throughout Chicagoland on 90.9FM; via streaming worldwide on http://www.WDCB.org (and the Tune-In app); and in the city of Chicago through cable television on CAN TV42. WDCB broadcasts from the campus of College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL.
Elsewhere, "MusicHeads" is reported to be a pilot series, so hopefully it will continue beyond the first
three shows. Here's the January 14 show, "What Is Swing?":
