Re: Beer — "all things malty and frothy"

We were in Saratoga Springs Saturday night at a new place, Druthers, which reportedly had an impressive beer selection. While enjoying a brown ale, I studied the beer menu and commented to Jan how exotic it was, because I didn't recognize any of the names of the beers. Not one familiar brewery. Desp...

Unless the activity picks up considerably, I would also be unlikely to access Jazztalk from either a phone or tablet.

Re: How do you distinguish jazz from rock and funk music?

Good thing electricity has gotten fairly reliable these days.

Otherwise the rest of us would also be longing to listen to unamplified jazz in places without light, heat or air conditioning, refrigeration, ice and cooked food.

Re: How do you distinguish jazz from rock and funk music?

Rock is clearly more simplistic than Jazz. But the statement that rock music is "usually limited to three chords" is much more simplistic than either and simply dead wrong. Hey, it may have been valid about 55+ years ago. Not all of us stay abreast of every little trend. :music: HAHAHAHA!!!

Re: How do you distinguish jazz from rock and funk music?

Rock and funk came from the blues as does jazz, but rock, et al, is usually limited to three chords while jazz isn't. That may be over simplistic but most jazz players can play rock if they were motivated to while very few rockers can play jazz. Rock is clearly more simplistic than Jazz. But the st...

Re: How do you distinguish jazz from rock and funk music?

It's a little tricky to say (and tricky to get any kind of consensus) for many reasons, among them: 1) because rock and funk are in someways offshoots of jazz 2) because songs in the popular genres of music (I don't mean "mere pop" music) are often categorized by the audience they are mark...

The drummer/percussionist Matt Wilson, who has been so generous with me any time he was asked to do something related to a radio request. Truly a humble person with so much talent and a HUGE sense of humor. He's suffering right now. His wife passed away last week after a 4 year battle with leukemia...

Re: The Beer Thread

Great to see a post by Jimmy! Hey Bro! Lagunitas has a brand new (and limited time offering) DELICIOUS dark beer called Night Time. It's bitter/hoppy and extremely malty in a bitter chocolate/espresso type of way. AND, they are selling the bombers very cheap. Highly recommended! http://2.bp.blogspot...

This might be the First Boner Thread

On the anniversary contest thread, there was an inquiry as to whether there had been any boner threads in the first year. The response was "No there hasn't, so THIS is the first" Well, I can't believe I didn't start a boner thread before this, but if I didn't, than this is the first JT Bon...

I thought "Her" was a wildly overrated annoying piece of crap. (And I didn't like it.) It's supposedly about a guy who falls in love with an operating system. But the "part" of operating system was written exactly as if it was a human. For this reason, it failed miserably as an e...

Using what I've learned above, here's my capsule review of the Lincoln Center Jazz Ensemble's performance in the new Ellington themed Broadway Show "After Midnight" (a musical revue) :

Timbremental swinging! The audience roared like a Wooly Mammoth.
