Depending where and which organization you are talking about, I guess. But I agree with him for the most part. Many jazz festivals near here (Toronto, Montreal) support mainstream jazz and large pop acts. Montreal, at least, has a strong presence of creative music in the form of Suoni per il Popolo...

I find that with straight-ahead jazz the distinction from the other genres is pretty obvious. I agree, there are plenty of good options available. We're usually a bit behind and tend to watch series a year or more after they're first broadcast.

Interestingly enough I think women, in general, are producing some really fine music these days. Just look at some of the finer offerings in Pop Music this past year. Lorde, Aluna George, The Dum Dum Girls, and Haim all released some really outstanding albums. The boys have some serious catching up...

I've often thought that I would love to do something like this down where I am, but it seems so daunting since I have no background in music promotion, or much else to do with music for that matter.
