Re: Potter, Turner, Street & Blake @ The Jazz Gallery

I'm probably a bigger fan of Turner than of Potter, whose constant virtuosity sometimes wears me out. But when I saw him with his own quartet last year--David Virelles, Joe Martin, and Gerald Cleaver--I was convinced. There's a level of instrumental virtuosity, the sheer chops and the ability to cre...

Re: Potter, Turner, Street & Blake @ The Jazz Gallery

Sounds like a memorable evening. I noticed you flagged this concert on Facebook on the night and wished I was there. It wasn't the first time the two saxophonists shared a stage. A couple of years ago there was a saxophone quartet that did a few concerts, one of which I saw in Paris--it had Potter, ...

Re: I Hate People

Jimmy, I will magnanimously allow you (and others!) to recline your seats "just about halfway." That's a good compromise for everyone. But ALL THE WAY BACK? It is a crime against humanity akin to chemical warfare or child prostitution.

Re: I Hate People

I wanted to lean back because I wanted to sleep -- which Delta allows me to. On the way to my destination, I had the unfortunate pleasure of sitting next to a guy who must have been pushing 350 pounds. But did you put the seat ALL THE WAY BACK? That is unforgivable, even if allowed! It completely r...

Happy Birthday, Sonny Rollins!

One of the very greatest.

Today, September 7, 2013, is his 83rd birthday! Here's to many more.

The above with Neils-Henning Orsted Pedersen and the *great* Alan Dawson, sometime in the 60's.

If you and I never crossed paths at Friendly's on Central Ave or Korvette's or Nathan's or Murray's Army Navy in White Plains or somewhere else where kids went, you and Robbie probably did. My God, Friendly's on Central Ave. That shopping center was a frequent stomping grounds for me from grade sch...

What years did you live there? I assume that if you were there during High School Years you went to Woodlands (?) I was there from 1966-76, the year I graduated from Woodlands High School. Small world, huh? The JC poster known as RBS was my classmate. Don't think he's here at JT yet. (How can you s...

In what town did you grow up, Tom? From age 8 through the end of high school I lived in an area known as "the unincorporated area of Greenburgh," New York. As you may or may not know, Greenburgh is a "town" that includes six incorporated villages and a large unincorporated area....

Then there's the simple argument advanced in this article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2013/08/29/9-questions-about-syria-you-were-too-embarrassed-to-ask/ "the reason that the world got together in 1925 for the Geneva Convention to ban chemical weapons is because this stuf...

No idea, but I wouldn't even if I could. The wife and I go on binges of watching recommended American TV series on DVD, but other than that I stay away from the television. I only watch movies at the cinema.

There's a saying they have in France: "If you meet only one asshole during the day, you're lucky. If you meet two or three, that's not surprising. If all you meet are assholes--then you are the asshole." Not to say that anyone posting on this thread is an asshole, and certainly not Jimmy! ...

Personally, even with the ban, I think clearly consensual, cheerful, humorous or joshing citations of private messages are unlikely to be noticed much. It's when there is conflict or the possibility of conflict that the problem arises. Steve(thelil), it seems like you are talking about instances whe...

My old man is a boogie-woogie enthusiast and had a record or two featuring Pete Johnson, Albert Ammons (father of Gene "Jug" Ammons), and Meade "Lux" Lewis. Great stuff.

My father was a casual jazz fan and I remember he would put on records by Stan Kenton, Sarah Vaughan, the Four Freshmen, and Dave Brubeck. Not sure which was the first, but I remember that Kenton and Vaughan were over my head. I couldn't hear it. I loved the Four Freshmen (especially "Poinciana...

Hey, Fred K, I looked up Terry Allen on YouTube. Love it! I'll be getting that new album, "Bottom of the World." Thanks! Wikipedia informs me music is only one of his means of expression. His main gig is as a painter, and his work is in the collections of many important museums. Interestin...

The first YouTube with the vocalist doesn't do it for me, but the rest of it is real easy on the ears. In addition to fusion drums and keyboard sounds, I hear aspects of early 70's dance-band funk, like Kool and the Gang's first, mostly instrumental album (cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kool_and_t...

You can count me in as C&W fan. Love the latest Guy Clark album and have been on a bit of a GC binge lately. And I've been using Spotify to explore the roots, for example the lineage that goes Hank Williams > George Jones > Merle. And the Louvin Brothers are great. Gospel and non-gospel. http://...
