Re: Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga - Cheek to Cheek
Kind of a non-story for me. The odds of me paying money for this is slim to none and I don't see the hype on this as having any impact on real jazzers. I did skim through the article and some of his statements are just silly. Such as the following: By contrast, fans of other forms of music don't nor...

Re: Jazz Videos
When I tried to watch the Jeff Ballard video, this is what I saw instead. Watch this video on YouTube. Playback on other websites has been disabled by the video owner. What a load of crap! :poo: Sorry about that, I didn't check that it was working but everything looked normal when I posted the vide...

Re: Streaming music kills jazz and more......
I have actually decided that I will no longer buy music online, it has become so frustrating. Add to that the fact that the only people making money on the online sales are everybody except the musicians and I'm outta there.

Re: What shall we call it?
Yes, you're probably right, he is probably referring to Lincoln Centre crowd and some academics, those who accept jazz only when being played with changes. I may be projecting here… but I'd say that he is also talking about festivals and venues to play being essential to the survival of the music a...

Re: What shall we call it?
Depending where and which organization you are talking about, I guess. But I agree with him for the most part. Many jazz festivals near here (Toronto, Montreal) support mainstream jazz and large pop acts. Montreal, at least, has a strong presence of creative music in the form of Suoni per il Popolo...

I may be a bit naive about this issue, but isn't he giving the jazz purists a bit more power than they really have?

Re: How do you distinguish jazz from rock and funk music?
I find that with straight-ahead jazz the distinction from the other genres is pretty obvious. Where things get a bit harder to define is with groups that are a little less traditional in their approach to the music, for example: Happy Apple https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=im7nnvvIrPo Definitely has ...

Wimbledon is into the second week, and what a beginning to that second week!! Our girl, Genie Bouchard is into the semis. All of the big-name stars are gone on the women's side and all that's left are some great players without all the drama. I love the direction that women's tennis is going now aft...

Re: Is this the new Golden Age of television?
I agree, there are plenty of good options available. We're usually a bit behind and tend to watch series a year or more after they're first broadcast.
Some of what we have been enjoying lately:
Covert Affairs
Damages
The Americans
Game of Thrones

Re: SOMETHING ELSE! Hamilton, Ontario, Canada | June 16-21,
If I can sort of do it, anyone can. No experience necessary. You have to have $, access to funding/sponsorship, be well organized, well-connected, be slightly insane. You need at least two of those to succeed. I'm coasting on the last one alone, really… So, I'm certain you can pull it off. Key thin...

Re: What Are You Listening To?
Interestingly enough I think women, in general, are producing some really fine music these days. Just look at some of the finer offerings in Pop Music this past year. Lorde, Aluna George, The Dum Dum Girls, and Haim all released some really outstanding albums. The boys have some serious catching up...

Re: SOMETHING ELSE! Hamilton, Ontario, Canada | June 16-21,
Congrats on pulling this together Cem.
I've often thought that I would love to do something like this down where I am, but it seems so daunting since I have no background in music promotion, or much else to do with music for that matter.
