Re: What Are You Listening To?

Thanks for the heads up.

As for my transcription project, the beauty of being a hack hobbyist is that nobody has any expectations. I plan to go at this a little at a time and try to enjoy the process. No rush for me.

Re: What Are You Listening To?

I'm about to attempy something that I haven't done before, that is transcribing a solo from a recording. I am going to attempt to transcribe Frank Foster's solo from Monk's We See on the 1954 album "Monk". So, I am at the point of listening to the tune over and over. I already have the tun...

Re: Joey Alexander

I had to laugh today, Phil Dwyer who is one of the top saxophonists in Canada, posted in Facebook "get me a young Joey Alexander!". He followed that with, that's all great until you need someone to co-sign on the rental van agreement.

Re: What will I download next?

Those who care probably already know but hatOLOGY / The Orchard is now up to 135 selections. I just took Joe Maneri Quartet's "Tenderly." Next is likely Max Nagl, Steven Bernstein, Noël Akchoté, Bradley Jones - "Big Four." They seem to be adding more, up to 179. I'm filling ...

Re: Meet Ellery Eskelin

Thanks for that Ellery. Hope to someday hear you play in person.

We're up here in a city that probably has less population than one building in NYC, so it all seems a bit scary to us. I'm sure it won't be an issue.

Re: Meet Ellery Eskelin

Here's a question for Ellery and/or anyone else who may know. I see that Harris Eisenstadt has a residency at the Stone for the first week of September, just wondering if you will be one of the "special guests" listed for later in the week? He lists two trio dates with the other two trio m...

New post on Ellery's blog

I know I'm a bit of a fan-boy with our friend Ellery, so be it. Here's the latest from his blog, some interesting perspectives on evolving personal reactions to music:

Re: What will I download next?

I love Harris Eisenstadt, have you heard his trio with Ellery Eskelin and Angelica Sanchez - the September Trio? The most recent release, "The Destructive Element" was one of my favourite releases of 2014.

Some interesting additions for you Tom, thanks for sharing.

Re: Jon Stewart

Yeah, I should've guessed as much. On the other hand, I'm not so sure that the Daily Show is really the genesis of that problem. Network News was becoming overly concerned with ratings long before Jon Stewart went on the air. Mainstream journalism is really a joke.

Help out Dayna Stephens

I don't know Mr. Stephens, but I've heard his music. Apparently, he has a rare kidney disorder and needs a transplant. As a result his gigging income has been seriously curtailed and he is having some financial difficulties. Here is a crowdfunding initiative that I heard about from Oran Etkins Faceb...

Ben Goldberg's Orphic Machine from 2012. An album is set to be released later this month. On notable difference between this band and the one on the album is that Nels Cline will be on guitar on the album.

If journalists can't tell the difference between journalism and comedy I'm not sure how that's Jon Stewart's fault.
