Re: Little known facts (that aren't true)
And also Engelbert Humperdinck. These little known facts remain "to be verified" by Snopes: Actress Jamie Lee Curtis is only one of dozens, if not hundreds, of celebrities who are hermaphrodites. Curtis was born with an unusual chromosome structure (ostensibly some variation of XXY). Other...

Re: The SmallsLIVE Foundation Newsletter
That is great news. I've been there once, and it was memorable. And a very short walk from Smalls, so you can do both in the same night with ease. Spike posted this on Facebook last night. Means I still might have a chance to see Mezzrow: :) As hard as it is for me to believe this, the Mezzrow 10 ye...

Pharoah Sanders — R.I.P.
Intro paragraph to the write-up by Jennifer Lucy Allan for The Guardian : https://i.imgur.com/VIOpDrP.png John Coltrane, speaking to jazz musician Albert Ayler, once described himself, Pharoah Sanders and Ayler as “the father, the son and [the] holy ghost”. Sanders played sideman to Coltrane on many...

Re: Village Vanguard to Reopen In NY
I just saw a documentary about the reopening of the Village Vanguard on Japanese public broadcasting. And then thought they really needed to visit Smalls and Mezzrow, too, to tell their story. Or someone does!

Re: The SmallsLIVE Foundation Newsletter
At this point, I think Cuomo is in need of a personality bypass. Spike was definitely done hard by circumstances, and should never have ended up the hot water that anonymous person put him in.

Re: The SmallsLIVE Foundation Newsletter
The news keeps getting a little bit better with each passing of 2-3 weeks. Hoping that this progress does not get reversed again.

The 58th National Jazz Festival (NZ)
I suspect this is the jazz festival least likely to be cancelled or postponed in 2021.

Of course, you have to be fortunate enough to either live in New Zealand or be able to get there.

It looks like major webhosts all decided the roll out the latest version of PHP around the same time, without warning, nor considering the implications for sites not supported by the latest version. I spent quite a bit of time solving the problem here and on other sites I host.

The ever-changing landscape, indeed.... From Spike Wilner this morning. It is with great sadness (as well as exhaustion) that I must announce that, by the order of the governor, Smalls and Mezzrow will be shut down to the public effective Monday. Tonight and tomorrow will be our last public shows f...
