Re: Documentaries
Ron, thanks a lot for recommending A Chef's Life . I wasn't sure at first because Vivian got on my nerves a bit, but that wore off and can't wait for Season 3 now (September 1st on PBS, IIRC). Have been watching the documentary Human Planet on Netflix. It's several gorgeous episodes and really has s...

Re: What TV Shows Are You Watching?
I just had a look and the third season of The Mind of a Chef is available on Amazon Prime. I hadn't seen it yet (Netflix has seasons 1 and 2). The second half of season 3 features Mangus Nilsson, whom I found very interesting in A Chef's Table. I skipped right to his episodes and am plowing through ...

Re: What TV Shows Are You Watching?
Thanks, Ron. I'll check it out. I recently enjoyed A Chef's Table, the Netflix show (liked most of it anyway), and also The Mind Of Chef (not all great episodes but some really strong ones). I don't really like the cooking shows that are all procedural cooking, but love these shows about chefs. Wish...

Re: What Movies Are You Watching?
Sounds like Lebowski to me. Ha, fair enough! I won't argue that you can draw that conclusion, at least at a high level like that. However :smug: ...I'm sure you could just as easily compare IV and Lebowski to other films in what I'll call, for lack of a better term, the gumshoe genre. I just read t...

Re: What Movies Are You Watching?
Really enjoyed parts of Inherent Vice, but in the end a frustrating, failed takeoff on The Big Lebowski. You know, I don't think I ever thought to compare it to The Big Lebowski. I thought that Inherent Vice was quite good. It's an odd concoction, that's for sure. But I think PTA made it work (what...

Me too. I liked Interstellar more, but it's certainly flawed.
Did you see Looper? That's a sci-fi film that I enjoyed a lot more.

Can't imagine either would do it, but Tina Fey or Amy Poehler might be two of the handful that could pull it off.

It's the blasted back door that's the problem. Better attach a string to anything that's smaller than a breadbox. It's a lot better than going to the ER and making up a story about how you fell on a barbie doll.

Ebert could definitely be a dick. In their relationship, I feel like he was the bigger asshole.
I always appreciated Ebert's writing, even though I disagreed with him often.

I agree with you guys. I will not intentionally leave my kids anything. I sent my daughter through school, and, unlike many of her friends, she'll graduate from college debt-free. That's a huge thing. We'll also pay for what I'm sure will be a ridiculous wedding. We'll end up leaving them the house ...

The Roger Ebert documentary Life Itself is debuting on CNN on Sunday. I've heard good things about it. Shit! I forgot about that. I wanted to at least record it. Hopefully CNN will rerun it to death. For anyone that watched Siskel and Ebert, it's worth watching Life Itself just to see the outtakes ...

A 20% drop would give me a fucking heart attack. Jimmy, some advice I've heard over the years that I intend to live by is that you should not have money invested in equities that you'll need to use in the next 7-10 years. I do plan to continue, post-retirement, to stage money that I'll need down th...

Frank is available via streaming from Netflix right now. Pretty terrific. The last scene is mesmerizing; I watched it like 5 times. The film has really stuck with me since I watched it last night. There are videos of the band (from the film) playing live, including on The Colbert Report. Fun stuff....

"A Most Violent Year," directed by J.C. Chandor. An ambitious businessman in the New York area in 1981 struggles to compete without resorting to the gangsterism prevalent in his industry. Good stuff. The period depiction of the New York of--my God--over 30 years ago is convincing. Love me...

The Wire is great. For more excellent TV check out The Knick. Gone Girl Good story but left me emotionally flat I wasn't impressed with The Knick early on but I felt that it got stronger as the season went on. Had me by the end for sure. Gone Girl was another one I checked out in the theater. I lik...
