Re: What TV shows are you watching?

FWIW, I've always said that British actors are much better at accents than their American cousins. Johnny Depp is an exception, maybe. But Americans doing British generally suck, while a lot of Brits do perfect American. According to my Arkansan wife, Spacey's accent is kind of a caricature of who ...

Re: Food For Thought

My daughter has worked at Chili's for around 4 years. She said recently that she "judges" the people who come in there. Their burgers used to be pretty good but I think they've suffered from lower quality and, especially, comparison to the multitude of places around now that have better bu...

Re: What TV shows are you watching?

I liked Orange is the New Black a lot. After a few shows I was a bit indifferent but it really grew on me. It was fun.

I was surprised to find that much of the high-level story on which the series is based is true. Not the details so much but Piper's story.

Re: What TV shows are you watching?

What do you think of Amazon Prime and the Amazon streaming service in general? I don't buy a lot of stuff from Amazon that requires shipping, so if I got AP it would be specifically for the streaming. I got it a few months ago just because I wanted to see Justified and I'm not sure I've watched any...

I can't appreciate the stuff. Maybe someone can explain to me what they do to the stuff to justify charging so much sometimes? I get it with Whisky based on the preparation and aging process but vodka? I don't get it. I can appreciate a good martini once in a while but don't know that the vodka matt...

Re: The Documentaries Thread

If you look at something like HBO, we love Game of Thrones and I watch a few other things on there but nothing provides the value of netflix for us. Netflix is certainly a great bang for the buck, but to be fair - and since this is a documentary thread - HBO has produced or acquired some really gre...

Re: The Documentaries Thread

I absolutely loved it. Good to see it's available on Netflix. Many people think Netflix is of limited value because it doesn't deliver all the the Hollywood blockbusters they want (or not in a timely enough manner?). But as a fan of documentaries and someone not that interested in Hollywood blockbu...

WOOHOO!!! I've been wanting to see that since I first saw the trailer for it! Thanks for the heads up, Lenny! I was on the fence about whether to start a documentaries thread for this or something like....Now available via cable or streaming. I think it was drum solo who pointed out that Gi...

A doc I've seen recently in a theater, that I hope will come to Netflix is "Twenty Feet from Stardom" about backup singers (mostly black female backup singers). Fascinating and inspirational. Yeah, I can't wait for that one too. i said this before on another thread but I heard the Fresh A...

Werner Herzog's Happy People: A Year in the Taiga is available on Netflix. It looks at a year in the life of the people in a village in a frigid part of Northern Russia. It especially follows the hunters/trappers, who's lives and work I found fascinating. What craftsmanship and dedication. A life of...

Re: What TV shows are you watching?

With all the channels we get on Direct plus HBO, Showtime and the Genie, I can't get motivated to get Netflix with a bunch of reruns of show I already saw or didn't want to watch in the first place and the odd maybe good original show. It's hard to justify having all of these channels and packages ...

Fresh off a week at the beach in Sea Isle City, NJ. This is the view from my brother-in-law's back deck. The sunsets look so amazing and different every night. Also watched a sea turtle digging a hole and laying eggs right in the front yard.

Also saw Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere". Overall good to very good, especially if you are a fan of her sensibilities, which I am to a certain extent. I enjoy anyone who makes decent films out of Hollywood without following the typical formulaic bullshit. Her films are certainly hers. Stone, ...

I enjoyed Django Unchained--not as good as the Hitler re-imagining, but still entertaining if you enjoy QT. It was a good honest ride. Liked Inglorious Bastards better too. I did like Django (it's a 3 star movie to me). It was just disappointing when I was expecting it to be on the level of Inglori...

Not ready to abandon IPA's, but in hot weather I prefer a less bitter and less alcoholic one. I seem to be finding Goose Island on tap and it seems to be doing the job for me. They've owed by InBev now so they're everywhere . I'm thinking they're on their way to being the biggest selling IPA if the...

I saw him in the late 80s and he had the fucking gall to pull a piece of paper out of his pocket in case he needed to glance at the lyrics as he sang "Every Picture Tells A Story". What a dick.

It's also hard to tell from that picture just how big that platform is. IIRC, it was like 5 stories and you could get lost in there.

Haha! That's the one, Ron. I forgot that I also spent one night on a nearby platform but it was very old and a very different experience.
