Re: Natalie Cole
I never considered her a jazz artist per se, but she had jazz sensibilities, without question. Hey Ron! So kinda/sorta going back to the original premise of the thread, I'm curious, do you consider Sinatra, Bennett, & Torme to be Jazz singers? How about Ella, Sarah, & Billie? I think that w...

Re: Grammy Nominations/Awards — Jazz
This years Latin Jazz nominations are typically bogus in that especially endearing Grammy kinda way! As low-visibility as Latin Jazz is, it still seems like the nominations are the typically usual subjects. Such a shame that so much great music gets overlooked due to what I can only assume is lack o...

Re: Natalie Cole
Natalie Cole is a fine singer obviously influenced by her surroundings as she grew up. Who decides if someone is a jazz singer? The jazz players and sidemen? Unfairly perhaps they do. Perhaps fairly they do. Your question has made me think of the many singers I've worked with and to consider which ...

Natalie Cole
I was listening to 'unforgettable' today and thinking about how she's released close to a 1/2 dz records of her singing standards (own 'em all!), where she's accompanied by everything from a small combo to a big band to a full orchestra, and she nails it every time. I recall how Linda Ronstadt relea...

Man, Netflix just keeps on bringing it! Their latest original series; Bloodline, starring Kyle Chandler, Sissy Spacek, & Sam Shepard is outstanding! It's also being broadcast in the new 4k format, it's gorgeous to look at! Netflix feels as fresh and innovative as HBO did when it 1st started thei...

Re: Lew Soloff, R.I.P.
I was lucky enough to see him live on many occasions over the years. Not to be a jazz snob, but it always bothered me a little to see him identified as a BS&T member. I like BS&T, but that is such a small part of Lew's long and distinguished career. RIP I hear what you're saying, (t...

Re: What TV Shows Are You Watching?
Yeah, I thought something was wrong with me for not liking 'Better Call Saul'. All these exclamatory reviews but I ain't feelin' it! I can honestly say that the 'crime' genre, regardless of the medium, is a life-long favorite. Yet, surprisingly, I never thought that 'Breaking Bad' was the groundbrea...

Too sad. I own a lot of music featuring Lew Soloff. I especially enjoy his work on Carla Bleys' big band release; 'Fleur Carnivale'. I follow many artists and mags on FB, the outpouring of love and respect from so many artists has been an eye-opener! RIP.

Re: What TV Shows Are You Watching?
Just finished binge-watching the new season of 'House Of Cards', amazing! The show really hit's its stride about ep. 7-8. As amazing as Spacey is, this season belonged to Robin Wright, her performance and look is like a stiletto; sharp, dangerous, and so sexy!. Michael Kelly as Doug Stamper is extra...

Re: Are you an early adopter of technology?
I remember going to a Newmark & Lewis in 1985 searching for a new cassette recorder and walking out with a JVC CD player. This new techno seemed so fresh at the time. I later found out that the player, and the sound, were far from state of the art but it didn't matter, I dove in head 1st! While ...

Wow, time flies. Started this thread in 2013! Anyhow, Snarky Puppy continues to reach new heights! While it really doesn't matter to me, as all I care about is being able to buy their music, the fact that they're recording on the Impulse label now seems to be further proof of their continued success...

Re: What Movies Are You Watching?
I just came into a stack of illegally recorded flicks. Begs the question, if I didn't do the recording, am I wrong to watch the discs? Obviously, I say no. Especially as they were a gift from a friend. So I didn't do the recording (the crime), AND I got them for free!! Check out this list!: Inherent...

Is Chick Corea Miles Davis' greatest alumnus?
Just saw that Chick just won 2 more Grammy awards today (for 2 separate recordings!) and the thought occurred to me, he's got to be the most successful (I know this doesn't automatically translate into 'greatest') pianist Miles ever employed. As I thought about it some more, I'm thinking, forget pia...

Re: What Movies Are You Watching?
"What does "restored version" mean?" HBO converted the video to HD and to fit rectangular tv screens. Coincidentally I was re-watching the Wire before the 'restoration' and the improvement was substantial! I unintentionally watched 3 Scarlett Johannsen movies this past weekend. T...

Empire Of Sin
I'm reading this book by Gary Krist - Empire Of Sin - A Story Of Sex, Jazz, Murder, And The Battle For Modern New Orleans. What a great book! Although historically factual, it reads like a novel. Covering the 30-yr period of time during the beginning of the 20th century. Effortlessly covering the po...
