I caught French Connection on cable the other night; hadn't seen the whole thing in many years. I was digging the score and only at the end credits did I remember that Don Ellis composed it.

Not my first or favorite Coltrane, but like Kind of Blue, just a mountaintop achievement, an essential recording whose power and lasting relevance cannot be denied.

Nicely done. I imagine his medical bills must be outrageous. Is there a fund for him?

It's a Jewish tradition to place a stone on a grave marker, simply as a way to show that you were there. I have nothing to add to this thread, other than I agree he was a good one and I wish I had had the chance to meet him in person, so I'm just leaving a stone here.

I love trios because it seems to demand the most listening and communication among the members in order for it not to devolve into just a soloist-with-rhythm-section thing, but rather a true three-way conversation. That said, I also like to hear a range of voices, even if it's just one other instrum...

For my birthday three years ago, no fewer than three people gave me these drumstick pencils. I broke off the lead ends and used them for drumming on my steering wheel while in the car.
