Re: Beer — "all things malty and frothy"
Both of those brews look interesting to me, rlfun. I love Ska's line: "It takes characters to brew beer with character." I enjoyed one of these the other night, a 22oz. bottle from Midnight Sun Brewing in Anchorage. Trickster Pumpkin Ale http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Z6kUzKoysQA/UmWPgSNxmkI/A...

Re: José Domingos Raffaelli, R.I.P.
I won't enter the debate about José's age. That's for others to do if they choose. I'm pretty certain that José doesn't care much about the debate. José posted on JazzCorner infrequently, almost solely on the Brazilian Music-related threads, but was active there until the last y...

Working my way through this glorious recording, now on Disc 2, which begins with "Sophie". Oh, boy! Man, do I love Kenny Wheeler's work! I can't believe I waited this long to add this to our library. "Better late ..." http://music.geocities.jp/softsjp/KENNYWHEELERMUSICFO...

Perhaps, at least for the remainder of the current tour, Tim will be replaced (again) by Trist Curless of the Los Angeles a cappella group, m-pact. He filled in for Tim (relatively) recently while recovering from spinal surgery. Valerie, we haven't heard The Manhattan Transfer l...

I have a subscription to Doug Ramsey's very fine Rifftides arts journal blog, and want to share this recent entry regarding Kenny Wheeler. I found it fascinating. http://www.artsjournal.com/rifftides/wp/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/Kenny-Wheeler-at-the-piano.jpg "The process I go through to ...

Re: Tim Hauser - Manhattan Transfer - R.I.P.
Sadly, this may spell the end of the group as we've known it. Tim was such an essential ingredient that I can't imagine them going on without him. These four musicians/singers/composers/arrangers are some of the nicest, most genuine people you can imagine. They were very modest, easy to app...

Our fellow poster, Pete Cherches, made me aware of the passing of a dear poster from our days at JazzCorner, José Domingos Raffaelli. As I said on Facebook, "He was an elegant, passionate man, and we were richer for having known him." His obituary can be found here: http://oglobo.globo.co...

Tim's death hit especially hard since my wife & I had the good fortune to spend some time with Manhattan Transfer and enjoy their spirit and honest, unassuming approach. http://jazztimes.com/images/ui/logo_jt.gif 10/16/14 Tim Hauser, Co-Founder of the Manhattan Transfer, Dead at 72 Was only...

To deal with my grouchiness, I'm whipping up some risotto with lamb, mushrooms, shallots And Thai basil. A small salad with gold heirloom tomatoes accompanied by my friend Johnny Black. I braised the lamb in some stock and will use that for the risotto. I'll probably still be grouchy, but well fed....

GG, that's definitely one of the most unique arrangements and presentations of Layla I've ever heard. I wouldn't have expected Wynton to be onboard with this, frankly.

Re: Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga - Cheek to Cheek
Thanks for those thoughtful comments, rlfun. It's my feeling that far too many people make the predictable mistake of a knee-jerk response as soon as they hear the name Lady Gaga. They write her off ... instantly. I've been conflicted about her, but have heard enough amazingly/surprisingly ...
