Re: Trivial Annoyances
I don't understand people who talk on their cel phone while they're in a public restroom doing their business. Forget about the thoughtlessness of annoying other people in the restroom - I would hate to be the person on the other end of the line knowing the guy is sitting in a stall.

Perhaps a bigger thing is, though I have not seen it since it was in theatres, I recall her performance as being pretty darned good.. Yeah, I remember really liking her performance in that movie. Easy on the eye, too. The Woody Allen imitation thing is something Allen has been doing a lot in the la...

Re: What TV shows are you watching?
Thought it was OK. Almost feels like serial killing is becoming the flavor of the month. I agree in general and would agree in this case if it was just a straight procedural, but just based on the first episode it seems like there's a lot more going on here. Agree that it's always fun to see old fr...

Anyone see the pilot for True Detective? That was really good. Yes, and yes it was. Several HBO stable actors popping up (including one of the most colorful characters in Deadwood). Yes, and Clarke Peters and Michael Potts who played Brother Mouzon. Great work from Harrelson and McConaughey as well...

Tom Reiss - The Black Count: Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo Really good. Very well researched and Reiss' novelistic and often subjective writing style is well suited for the fascinating subject matter. The life of Alex Dumas was just as exciting as his son's novels. And wha...

Re: What Movies Are You Watching? Part 1
I always found Ferrell funny as hell on SNL, but his movies have been busts. Haven't seen Anchorman 2, but the first one was horrendous. Talladega Nights is a classic. I can live without the rest. I've enjoyed all Ferrell/McKay movies to one extent or another, but Talladega Nights stands out as the...

Unfortunate, but I can't say I didn't see it coming. No one can say you didn't give a good try. I never expected the joint to be jumping, but I did think there was a small chance JC folks could make it a relaxed place to chat without the FB limitations. It does seem like any time there was any momen...

Dog Soldiers was my introduction to Stone. If you like this, read "A Flag For Sunrise," which I think is probably his best. "Children Of Light" is also right up there. I liked "Damascus Gate" but it is mostly a political thriller, complete with twisty ending. I did lik...

Sherlock is back, yo! Ok, technically not back in the US until the 19th, but at least folks on the other side of the pond have seen it. I'm also giddy with excitement that Community is back tonight with creator Dan Harmon as the showrunner again. So far the reviews I've read have been quite positive...

Hope everyone's having a great start to the year. I'm back in the office after a 1.5 week vacation of doing nothing but playing video games and watching Netflix. I haven't taken that much consecutive time off in years (much preferring vertical vacations), and it was a pain getting up at 6:15 this mo...

Orphan Black Any you guys seen this? Manoman, just went thru the 10 episode season this past week on demand. Outstanding! Another superior show from BBCAmerica. Great Story-telling, very addictive but the story behind this is the amazing lead actress, the relatively unknown rookie Tatiana Maslany, ...

Richard Stark (Donald Westlake) - The Hunter https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1328724284l/618399.jpg The first Parker novel is a quick, fun read. That's a coincidence, someone recently recommended "Michael Strogoff" specifically to my son (an adult). He chanced upon a cheap used paperback copy at a flea market and is now reading it. It's a terrific adventure book, though I may be overrating it because I loved it so much as a kid. I...

Re: What was the first adult literature you enjoyed?
My first favorite book was Black Beauty . I wonder how that would sound as an adult. My first favorite book was Jules Verne's 'Michael Strogoff'. I read about six or seven times in junior high. A couple of years ago I re-read it and for the first time in English. I was surprised how fun and excitin...
