Fun Vinyl Offers!
This past week I've received notice of 2 interesting vinyl offers via Facebook. The 1st was from a band offering it's fans the option of pre-ordering their upcoming release in vinyl and giving them the choice of 150 colors to choose for the vinyl! Unfortunately I don't recall the name of the group b...

Re: Convince me otherwise please?
You see, it's all purely subjective. While I'd wholeheartedly agree that ANY musician can play too much, I'd have to admit to cutting (some, not all) drummers a little more slack!;) Just last night I was listening to one of my favorite duet records; Horacio 'El Negro' Hernandez & Giovanni Hidalg...

Re: Convince me otherwise please?
I own a few recordings featuring bass solos going 'arco', I'm pretty sure I've even seen a few live. The fact that I'm not positive is telling. Going 'arco' adds a sonic texture and depth, shows skill and daring....but it's still a bass solo!!;) I'lltellyawhat, a primary peeve about bass solos is th...

Re: Convince me otherwise please?
You know something that's always left me cold? Bass solos! Is it just me? And trust me, I'm aware of the greatness of the instrument and equally aware of the legion of extraordinary musicians throughout the history of music that are bass players. But man, when a bass solo starts, acoustic or electri...

Re: George Duke RIP
A year ago I took a day to try to 'follow' most of the musicians/bands on my pod via facebook. My FB page has become my personal daily music newsletter ever since. This morning it's full of personal messages from musicians across a wide spectrum paying tribute to George Duke. He was an inspriration ...

The last few have been: Peppermint Twist: The Mob, The Music, & the Most Famous Dance Club Of The 60's - Enjoyed this one, talk about a book that should be a movie! I Wear The Black Hat: Grappling With Villains (Real And Imagined) - An interesting an often humorous essay on what constitutes vill...

When I was a kid livin' in da Bronx, there was a huge Bustelo plant 5-6 blocks away from where I lived! Every day at a certain time they'd roast and the entire neighborhood smelled of delicious fresh-roasted. I remember taking a class trip to the plant and coming home with a bag of freshly-ground Bu...

Re: Steve Berrios - RIP
I love the tradition of honoring with music. The following is an account of the church service for Steve Berrios, told by Bobby Sanabria: Maestro Steve Berrios's memorial tribute last night at St. Peter's Church in NYC was fabulous. Kudos to Todd Barkan, Andy Gonzalez, Rene' Lopez and others for put...

So I was looking for a video featuring Paquito playing with Anat Cohen's Choro Ensemble (could've sworn I saw one awhile back but....) and came across this one instead. It's not Choro but.....dayum, it's good!;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6V030_WP78&feature=player_detailpage I'm sure that i...

Re: Why is Florida so screwy?
Believe me, I live in FL and I know how looney tunes it is. But c'mon, I was born and raised in da Bronx, can there be anywhere on the PLANET as insane as NYC!? This coming from someone that will always have love in his heart for the Apple, so much so that I still make a point of going to the NY new...

Re: Big Bands
A good source of Big Band music these days can be found at colleges. I've seen concerts advertised at different schools that usually feature an invited 'guest' soloist. One school that's had success actually recording is the Manhattan School of Music. They've released 2 records with Bobby Sanabria; ...

Re: Headphones
I've had my Sennheiser HD600's for close to 10 yrs now, I replaced the stock cable with one from Cardas and recently replaced the ear cushions, they're as good as new. Coupled with a Musical Fidelity tube headphone amp, Senn's have great synergy with tubes. I recently got a new pair of IEM's (inner ...

Re: What TV shows are you watching?
Sunday nights is (as usual) my favorite night for TV. Ray Donavan, Dexter, Newsroom, True Blood, and I have to watch BBC's Copper On Demand. Too many shows, not enough time! Donavan's #1, it's firin' on all cylinders. Hated True Blood last year, and could do without a few of the lesser plots (The sh...
