The Economist newspaper: I really can't imagine how this staple in my life could be improved upon. (I'm speaking here of the printed version; the web version is another story.) Intelligent, humorous, timely, geographically comprehensive. Lentils: Yes, they came up in a food thread here. Just love th...
I'm just starting to play, but this is nice. http://jdisc.columbia.edu/ J-DISC: An Online Jazz Discography Jazz history resonates in jazz recordings. Jazz Studies Online staff is working on a project that will provide rich, reliable data on recordings that can help unlock and elucidate the stories t...
If you (Scott, Ron, Justin) ever need help with the website/forum, feel free to hit me up (other than the next three months or so, while I'm up to my elbows in really unbelievably ugly sh*t).
Interesting (kind of) that this mainly commercial site (AAJ) is soliciting donations, while our non-commercial hosts here refused them. (I think that's a correct characterization of the forum genesis under Scott.)
Something about the org boards was just getting tiring to me - too much politics and album covers. Still a nice place. But this one's shaping up nicely.
Yes, the "reviews" were worthless. AAJ forums were really an advertising platform with discussion opportunities attached. Keeping that in mind and "don't believe the hype", it was a nice place to learn.
It was my trmendously good fortune to meet a really nice guy in a local stereo shop (db Audio in Berkeley) who set me up with a system that has remained "in use" (to the extent I ever come in contact with it for more than a moment) 35 years later. Sota Star Sapphire turntable Sumiko tonear...
Ruby Tuesday (which I think used to be like Applebee's, TGIF, Chili's, etc.) has morphed into a chain of places with decent entrees (their crab cake is actually delicious), gargantuan and good quality salad bars and local and/or decent craft beers on tap. I've been spotted at the Ruby Tuesday salad...
Lacy and Coxhill are no longer with us. If we expand to outside the US, for me soprano saxophone and bass are clear: Evan Parker and Barry Guy as far as trombone, for me it is George Lewis or Ray Anderson, really two of the players who have helped transform the trombone from a somewhat of a seconda...
Soprano Sax: Well, my first thought was Steve Lacy. But Lacy over Shorter (even though it's not Wayne's main horn?) And Jan Garbarek's contributions can't be overlooked, though "most important" would be a stretch. Lol Coxhill's still around I think. Wait, Dave Liebman; nah, not over Lacy. ...
DB hasn't been relevant to me for many years... It's relevant to me just as a source of some basic news. I really do like reading/print (hence my 70 magazine subscriptions); it's portable and fits in with my vagabond life. Despite my presence here, there and (seemingly) everywhere, I don't really c...
Bebop's not going to like this but I have to mention how much I love the Keurig machines. I am not a big coffee drinker and this makes it easy for me to make a decent cup of coffee. All I know is it's better than what I make on my own. It's the Kindle of coffee makers, I guess. Bebop's non-judgment...
If nobody has supplanted him in your ears, yes. I don't vote, BTW. But vote for your favorites. It's not a Presidential election. ;) Sonny Rollins is fine. I can't muster the enthusiasm to think of whom I would REALLY like to see win, while knowing that he/she is probably going to muster 7 votes.
Does anyone here vote? I received a solicitation to vote (I'm a forty-year DB subscriber). I looked at the form and my eyes just glazed over. I find myself completely disinterested, despite my passion for "jazz". I suppose it's partially the fact that I know most of the people I would vote...
Speaking of Ethiopia(n), What a fantastic place for coffee. It's not just a drink. It's a whole ceremony - to my mind, even more elaborate and revered than tea in Japan...though not as formal and rigid. Would I say it's worth a trip to Addis? Mmmm, I wouldn't go that far! The coffee is fresh, but of...
It's almost like I'm changing topics here. Instant coffee. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But, since I travel 24/7/365, instant is a reality sometimes. 4:00AM in Dakar or Tblisi.
