Re: What was the earliest record you recall your parents pla
As a family? Bob Newhart, then Bill Cosby. But my father owned a couple of bars in downtown San Diego, so he had thousands of 45s which he'd test with my brother and me--seems as if the opinions of 6 and 10 year olds mirror those of drunken sailors on leave. :) So I heard everything from Marty Robbi...

I'm not being facetious, but to me it is like looking at a painting of a story.

My Review in JAZZIZ Has Been Published!
Guys--this is uplifting stuff. The summer 2013 issue is out--on the cover are Bob James and David Sanborn, promoting a new album and tour (with Steve Gadd). Included with every print copy are two CD samplers (parts 1 and 2) featuring James and Sanborn, Bobby Mcferrin, The Yellowjackets and... the tr...

Metal and Bone, an unusual movie that while good I can't actually say I'm really glad I watched.

So you mean the most important living jazz musicians from the '50s and '60s? Most important living legends still, well, living?

Eat That Question literally changed the way I thought about fusion keyboard playing. The perfect blend of jazz and rock for me.

We saw Now you See It, a completely impossible but still entertaining big budget film about four young magicians who are involved in some kind of scheme that involves robbing banks in real time from 7,000 miles away. Lots of hokum but still some good laughs.

For this of us who enjoy seeing comic books on the big screen, the new Wolverine is pretty good. Oddly draggy in parts, but overall a decent and interesting story and setting. I enjoyed the way that it ended (including the coda)--felt very much like the old days of reading a comic...

Pacific Rim--Guillermo del Toro makes a Michael Bay movie. Disappointing to say the least, but I didn't like his last one either.

I just finished my second Clevinger (first was The Contortionist's Handbook, very interesting rather than gripping) and the second was...I don't remember, something with Derma in the title. I'm not sorry I read them but I'm done with him now. Just shifted gears to something more predictable, another...

Judd Apatow's This Is 40. I enjoyed most of this very much. Yes, you've seen these actors play these types of roles before but they do it so well I wasn't bothered at all. Funny stuff, and dead on.

Re: How Long Has It Been Since You've Eaten a Big Mac
I hate to sound snobbish, but since living down here I find California's highly-praised mexican food to be overrated. That is, the places where it is elevated to high-ish cuisine are fine, but just walking into a joint and getting tacos or chile rellenos or something common? Better down here. "...

I enjoyed Django Unchained--not as good as the Hitler re-imagining, but still entertaining if you enjoy QT.
We watched Shall We Dance, the Japanese original. A feel good movie, lots of great mugging by the actors.

Yeah, John--I hear you. I live in Mexico and while I love the food--seafood especially since I'm on the coast now--I sure miss the US concept of salads. Steaks here are almost always a little disappointing.

Keep going, Scott--pick up Let It Be...Naked and hear that album go from one of the Beatles' least impressive works to a slot in my top 3. Basically, two young engineers stripped away all of the un-sanctioned (by the beatles) production touches and overdubs introduced by Phil Spector after the Beatl...

Man, so many of you are so fucking YOUNG! I had no idea that I was older than almost everyone on this thread until now. First rock concert: Spirit, with opening act Poco. A peak experience. 1967. Second: Johnny Winter And, with Rick Derringer opening for...Poco! Another best experience of my life. T...

I just at a Burger King Cheesy Whopper--a burger with a piece of fried cheese. Even better than it sounds.
