Re: House Rules (Please don't break them in this thread!)

Thanks very much for that very kind comment, Randy.

"Great" is a pretty big word, and I'm not comfortable with it being used to describe me, but I certainly appreciate the gesture, my friend.

Re: House Rules (Please don't break them in this thread!)

I would also rather have no rules, but due to the nature of the beast, they are necessary.

If a little redundancy is the worst thing we have in our newly published House Rules, I can live with that. And will, at least for the time being.

Re: Potter, Turner, Street & Blake @ The Jazz Gallery

Thanks for the review, Ronald. Sounds like an evening well-spent. Pretty impressive that this group of musicians were not the original bill, yet delivered the goods for two solid sets. I would imagine they appeared on rather short notice. I think that having other musicians and music students in the...

Re: Now that it's over...

You're welcome, of course. Your need to improvise occasionally is duly noted. Improvisation has played a huge role in my life too, Jimmy. Yes, despite that, Scott & I both agreed that some boundaries were necessary. We weren't alone in that thinking, either. And, Justin was helpful on the techni...

Re: Now that it's over...

I read and appreciated your comments, Jimmy. You were a voice of reason and fairness in the chaos, in my opinion. I also understand your frustration. As promised, we have published the "House Rules" for jazztalk. They can be found in the upper right of the Index page, between the FAQ and S...

Happy 83rd Birthday, Sonny!

This is from a 1965 Copenhagen concert, originally recorded for television broadcast, Tom. Thank the jazz Gods for that archival footage, now part of the Jazz Icons series.

Thanks for that video link-up, Tom. Wonderful stuff.

Sounds like a lovely setting for a music-filled weekend.

The Brian Patneaude Quartet is on the program next Saturday. Wow! Brian was a poster on Jazz Corner many moons ago. Small world.

Brian is a fine player. Here's a taste.

Re: Food For Thought

Been up in Vermont since Thursday. Went to dinner last night and had a 22oz. perfectly cooked medium rare cut of prime rib. Melted in my mouth. In between bites I sipped on some Estancia Pinot Noir from Monterey, Ca. I've never ever eaten a 22oz. anything , Antonio! Where in the hell do you put it?...

Re: formulas in jazz

I'm afraid that I didn't express myself very clearly in post #7. What I tried to convey was a sense of the antithesis of jazz expression, spontaneity and improvisation ... predictability, sameness, etc. Of course I realize that there are some "formulas" in music. I'm a longtime musician an...
