Re: Orrin Evans, Liberation Blues (Smoke Sessions)

Thanks for the thoughtful review, Tom. I'm a big Orrin Evans (and Bill Stewart) fan, so this might be right up my alley.

Interestingly, Orrin's website shows the new album 'COMING SOON'.

Here is a link to a recent interview on WBGO.

Steve, how about a review of last night's Evan Parker & friends show at The STONE in the Live Music Reviews forum?

Thanks, preacherman!

Re: Putting together a jazz history presentation...

I was pleasantly surprised to see your new thread today, Tom. Welcome back! I am far from being a jazz scholar, so my input will be largely based upon what I've gleaned from experiences, as a student of music and a musician. I'm also one who enjoys "the hunt", so appreciate digging for new...

Re: Great Icon Gerald Wilson RIP

I was off-the-grid in the Alaskan wilderness for 24 hours, and this is one of the 1st bits of meaningful news I saw upon my return. I wish I hadn't. What a talent. What a mentor. What an elegant, gentle man. What a legend. What a loss. I've always loved Gerald Wilson's music. He had a sensibility, a...

Re: Only in Alaska!

Glad to hear of such fond memories of Palmer, BeBop. It's a cool, sleepy little town, but is awakening a bit. Patti & I are off to the wilderness with her 94 year-old father, to visit our son in his log cabin on-the-lake. It's an ongoing project, a labor of love, and we haven't seen it in perso...

Hey, Clint, do you know where that wild Chinook salmon came from? Just curious.

Re: Turntables

Ron, that Dual appears to be a nice, simple solution. I'm tempted. If you had, say, a $500 limit, would you get a new machine such as that Dual ready to plug and play or an older, sturdier tt, plus a tonearm, cartridge and preamp? I'm leaning towards the latter, but it would require more time and e...

Re: Turntables

Both of those components are designed primarily for home theatre applications though will also work for audio-only ones. Which amp do you plan to use with the new turntable, Cem? Personally, I think the Yamaha would be a better fit because of its power and built-in phono input. In that case, a phon...

Re: Turntables

Cem, before I answer the $500 question, what amp or amp/preamp combo do you have? Or is your power from an FM Receiver? Do you actually need the phono preamp, or do you have a phono input on your amp?

You're welcome, Cem. Sorry that I didn't factor in the hassle and expense of customs costs and other costs associated with sending products from the U.S. to Canada. After doing a bit of research, I discovered a couple of worthy online audio sources based in Canada, which should level the playing fie...

Haven't paid attention to her in years, realizing in her passing that I have a fondness for her all the same. Remember her as a mainstay on the Tonight Show. Someone suggested to me that she was undergoing an endoscopy (to stretch her esophagus) in a doctor's office and that she wasn't in a hospita...

I kind of like this guy here: http://buffalo.craigslist.org/ele/4626460947.html …and this one: http://toronto.craigslist.ca/mss/ele/4649687887.html I know little about buying such things, so not wanting to buy duds requiring tons of repairs or parts to work right. Re: Turntables

Thanks for that clarification re: phono preamp, BeBop. You are correct, sir. My mind was in a different space with respect to those, having always had a dedicated preamp/amp to work with. Some of the current tube-type preamps are pretty hip and have gotten a lot more affordable.

Thanks again, BeBop… and Chazro and Justin. Lots more useful guidance coming from JT folk than I'd expected on this. I think, I'm going to take it slow and try and find a well-made, probably second hand unit like Thorens, Linn or Rega and be ready to spend about 500 bucks, which is a lot for me. Be...

This should be fabulous! My pal, Danny Gottlieb will be in the drum chair, with his good friend Mark Egan on bass. The rest of the lineup is also stellar.
