Re: What Movies Are You Watching? Part 1

I think I liked American Hustle more than you did, stone, but I completely agree with these assessments: Christian Bale was great. Jennifer Lawrence was miscast, appearing like a teenager dressing up as an adult. Amy Adams was fine, and so was Renner, but also miscast. Bradley Cooper is an actor wi...

Dolphy: Freedom of Sound celebration/fundraiser—Pls. help

Sure.

I note that you seem mad at me for asking what you know about these groups. I'm not sure why, though.

Dolphy: Freedom of Sound celebration/fundraiser—Pls. help

I'll do it myself. I just thought since you were doing a little hyping for them you might have some interest in/prior knowledge of the beneficiaries.

Do you know anything about either of the groups for which this concert will be raising money?

Some of my fam have been watching "Breaking Amish" and "Storage Wars." I find those shows enjoyable in small doses. So many weird sub-cultures in this world.

Re: What Movies Are You Watching? Part 1

I absolutely agree with you, Lenny.

(1) Woody Allen writes terrible, completely unbelievable dialogue; and
(2) Blue Jasmine isn't really very good.

OTOH, I still think he's a terrific film maker. It's just that people often give him credit for the wrong things.

Speaking "kids' movies," my college-age daughter says that (of all things) the Lego movie is fabulous.

Re: Trivial Annoyances

My heating bills have been astronomical this endless winter. I really don't see how people who make considerably less than we do can pay theirs or why the hell anybody ever started living in areas where it's impossible to stay alive without fires inside your dwellings day and night.

Not bad, but I'd make it "...like a wooly mammoth surveying a murder of crows" (or maybe "a burglary of endives").

Re: Guide to writing a jazz review

Food (or food preparation) and animal (insect, bird, wooly mammoth, whatever) references are fun and take up space too. When I wrote reviews for Cadence , I used to fight with Bob Rusch a lot: "Please don't send me that kind of stuff, Bob. I don't know the first fucking...

Re: 75 pounds down ...

Yes, I think so. We don't have a room for it, so I stand it up in the corner of our den when it's not in use. It's huge and heavy, and it pisses my wife off having it there. But as I mentioned I have bad feet/ankles, so I need a sit-down aerobic thingy, and I hate swimming. I got it for...

Do you guys find rowing tough on the neck? Maybe I hunch my shoulders, though I try not to, but I often get (mild) cervical strains from rowing. (I have a Neptune.)

Re: Crimea

I heard one British pundit on the radio say something like this: "You don't understand, the Russian elite has never been to Uzbekistan or Kazakhstan--they don't care about those places one way or the other. But the Crimea is quite different. That's where they vacationed regularly; ...

Curious what people have to say about this. Is it like Obama saying "You know, 2/3 of the people living in Vancouver are actually American and would prefer to be part of the U.S. (you can ask them!) so I'm going to annex Vancouver"? And then the Mounties try to come in from Qu...

I envy you that spaciousness, Scott. Almost no part of the Northeast is way out in the middle of nowhere. The Minuteman Bike Trail used to be a railroad track too, but it's very popular and busy. Same for the trail on Cape Cod.

Re: 75 pounds down ...

I get most of my exercise from my commute, which can require a lot of walking if I don't take any buses, and rely only on the train between Cambridge and Boston. But this winter has made it all but impossible keep up. I've suffered from frequent/chronic ankle strains all my life because of ...
