Re: What Are You Listening To?

I assume GG knows this, but I only recently learned that Maya Rudolph (SNL, Bridesmaids) is Minny Ripperton's daughter.

Indeed, I have known that for a number of years, and it doesn't surprise me as Maya is so talented.

Love the Dregs, but I see them as more twangy fusion.

She was so young when she passed....what a shame.

Only 31. Anniversary of her death (in 1979) is July 12.

I'm not sure you can call any of the vanilla garbage that comes out of Nashville today "Country & Western".

And Alt. Country, by and large, is anything but vanilla.

I'm talking the stuff you'd see on CMT. I caught a Jason Isbell tune yesterday that I liked a lot.

Re: Live Performances that seemed to suck at the time.

The group currently billed as War is not worthy of the name. I caught them a couple of summers ago, but they only have the original keyboardist on board, and they've become a second-rate jam band that took 10 minutes just to introduce the members of the band.

Re: Yee-Haw!!! Any fans of Country and Western music?

Ask me and I'd say no, but looking at Cookie's list, yeah I love a lot of that stuff. Trouble is, the genre has become completely vanilla and style-conscious. But the old guys, well, let's just say I'm well aware that a lot of my favorite rock artists are fans of folks like Hank Williams, Don Willia...

Re: The most important THANK YOU of all.

It was great motivation from Scott and Ron to get this up and running, but it's a shared responsibility to keep it active, engaging, and both a worthwhile release and resource for us and many others who will come to lurk and learn. I for one will do that by introducing a new fake identity called Ler...

Re: Favorite Standup Comics - Then and Now

I've seen a couple of CK's stand up routines and have to admit I found him to be rather mediocre. Like, Jim Gaffigan mediocre. He's funny, but I'm not sure why he has been put on the pedastal he's on. I think he's absolutely hysterical, and him being a divorced, paunchy dad, a lot of his material c...

Re: Favorite Standup Comics - Then and Now

My modern favorite was Greg Giraldo until he offed himself, but I still love watching clips of his act and roasts. Louis CK is the funniest guy out there today, IMO. He covers all my bases and hits all my buttons, and I like his performance style. All time, definitely Pryor on top of the pyramid, wi...

Re: Celts hire Butler's Brad Stevens as Coach!

I'm guessing Brad Lohaus was unavailable. Articles I've read today are all about whether or not Rondo will give the coach respect, but I think the writing's on the wall and Rondo is the next on the trading block. Stevens will be the guy the young Celtics will listen to and learn from for a few years...

It may not be great jazz, but I recently began my first post-divorce relationship and this is one of my favorite records to get laid by.

Jason: Who are the groups that came out in the 90s wearing BB/BW influences on their sleeves? It would be impossible to assemble a comprehensive list, but attributed mentions on the BB wiki page include Sonic Youth (Thurston Moore was a talking head in Don Was's documentary about Brian), Beck, REM,...

To no one's surprise, Beach Boys, Providence Civic Center, 1978. Charles Lloyd opened but I didn't appreciate it at the time. The next concert was Boston, same year, and then a local radio station's Chrismas concert, featuring headliners The Cars, with Pablo Cruise (who also supported special guest ...

Re: Beach Boys.

I doubt we'll see Pete here. The BBS is dead according to him. But, he'd certainly be welcome. As for Smile, it is indeed a fantastic recording. And one that took me completely by surprise since I really wasn't a Beach Boys fan before. It does show beyond a shadow of doubt that Lennon and McCartney...
