This Saturday evening concert is dedicated to Michael Duva, who also [in addition to music promoter Josef Kaempf] left us way too early, just after Christmas 2013. Michael was a music promoter who for 15 years (1979-1994) hosted the finest New York city A-list jazz musicians at his legendary "hillside jazz club" in Waterbury, CT. He did it purely for the music!

I just read in my local newspaper that Mario Pavone will be at Cafe Nine in New Haven on Wednesday the 16th. I think I'll stop by. The listing did not mention who will be with him. The last time I saw him was at The Knitting Factory in NYC, probably ten or twelve years ago. I remember hanging at the bar and having a nice conversation with him and his son. Nice guy. Iirc Steve Reynolds was there that night as well. Mario is from Waterbury, Ct. Didn't know that until recently.

Whoo hoo! Just purchased tickets for the gig in New Haven. The charge was $12.00 each. Apparently it's going to be The Street Songs/Accordion Project. Nine players are listed. Nice.

"Featuring - Mario Pavone, bass / compositions. Matt Mitchell, piano. Adam Matlock, accordion. Carl Testa, bass. Steve Johns, drums. Brass Quartet - Dave Ballou, cornet/flugelhorn. Peter McEachern, trombone. Leise Ballou, french horn. Gary Buttery, tuba.

The music is based on my reflection of growing up in post WWll industrial and multicultural melting pot in Waterbury,CT ..... and hearing those Italian, Portugese and Polish accordions .... That front stoop music. The CD will be released worldwide on May 6th (2014) and is already slated for reviews from Jazz Times, all about jazz / nyc and on Owen McNally's. NPR JAZZ CORRIDOR. 'Pavone's music has the rhythmic and harmonic grids of be-bop and all that descends from it, and the cathartic tracing-in-air of free jazz' —Ben Ratliff (New York Times)"

Thanks, Rita. Maybe that info will lure our friend relyles down from West Hartford.

YVW. I'm glad you got tickets instead of dropping by! And yes, relyles wrote that he'd loved that band, so he might be tempted to see it again in New Haven on July 16.

I was at the Cornelia St. Cafe' show on Saturday, the Mario Pavone Pulse Quartet with his son Michael Pavone on Guitar, Ellery Eskelin and Gerald Cleaver. It was very good.

Full house last night at Cafe Nine. Never been there before. Small but nice joint. The only issue I had was their small dark stage that more or less hid the musicians that were not in the front line, mainly because of poor lighting. The stage could barely contain the nine piece band. Good acoustics, though.

The crowd was mostly older with a respectable representation of younger people. Mario was on it the whole evening but the standouts for me were Dave Ballou on cornet/flugelhorn and the young Adam Matlock. The kid played his ass off as did Mr. Ballou, who also did the arrangements. Adam Matlock made the accordion sing. He made that squeezebox sound like horns.

On the strength of this outing Joanne wants to go to the upcoming Litchfield Jazz Festival to hear some more from Mario Pavone & Company.
